Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

Just got mine and wow... Only able to run through my Dragonfly because I'm at the office but I'm pretty impressed with the HP. Visceral bass and great detail - definitely a different enjoyment from the HD800s!

If the th600 sounds just as good as the 900s, I'd def forgo the birch earcups to save some bones!! Can't wait to hear reviews on those as they get released..

Placed an order for the TH600. PriceJapan expects them to be in stock on Feb. 25th.

Why would you order the TH600 if you already own the superior TH900? Out of curiosity fof comparison?

Honestly? The uber price for the cherry birch is wasted on me. Yes they are nice looking but I just as well sell them and save a few bucks should the th600 perform just as well or close to the 900s. Plus, they don't look as easy to scratch or damage and I am an OCD nutcase when it comes to keeping my stuff pristine

But these really didn't disappoint at all... I think I could say they are the first "fun" "reference" headphone I have encountered.

Oftentimes, "lesser" phones aren't inferior, just different.

Besides your JH13, I would think.

+1

Cripes... all these new toys and I totally forget about the JH13s!

I was just saying to my fiance too that every time I listen to those, I always forget how amazing they are.

I've only had a loaner TH-600s for a few days of which most were spent burning in. All I can say not to expect the TH-600 to perform to the levels of the TH-900 and rightfully so. A company's not going to make a lower end model that's going to sound even "almost as good" for 1/2 the price.

To be fair, one could argue a lot of the TH900's "value" is in the presentation. I mean, let's be honest: a lot of the cost is probably due to the deluxe finish. That being said, I was holding out hope it would be more of a case of different-but-both-good rather than sucky-little-brother-to-the-TH900. Lately we've been seeing companies tuning their "lower end" models to be flatter-sounding versus the more "exciting" higher models.

Or maybe I'm just enamored with the way things work in the custom IEM market.... lol.

Isn't it usually the other way around? Lower end models to be more exciting-sounding compared to higher models. HD650 vs HD700 vs HD800, or HE-400 vs HE-500 vs HE-6, for example.

It's more common, sure. However there are companies who take the opposite approach more and more these days:

JVC's DX700 versus DX1000, the new Denon D600 versus 7100, the LCD-3 versus LCD-2 rev. 2, Edition 10 versus Signature Pro, Heir 4.A versus 8.A, JH13 versus JH16, Final 1602SC versus 1602SB, etc.

It's especially prevalent in the cIEM market, but there are certainly examples in the arena of headphones and speakers. It all comes down to how you market it.

Not just lately. This has been the case with HD600/HD650 from Sennheiser and DT880/DT990 from Beyerdynamic for instance.

Yeah, I sort of clarified what I was originally trying to say in my follow up post: it's increasingly common these days.

Regarding Sennheiser, I'd argue the legendary HE60 / HE90 pair is another example of this trend.

I've been looking forward to impressions of the TH600 but during the wait I'm becoming more and more tempted by the TH900.. knowing myself I'll probably end up with one of the two.

I have some questions for anyone who can help: is Fostex going to continue producing the TH900 for the forseeable future, and for members in the UK, what's the best retailer to buy the TH900 from?

Ah, like a slightly more polished D7000, then? That's what I was expecting.
