Some people believe that the Fostex planar drivers really need multiple watts of power to sounds their best, and the Atom would not provide that. (I'm not in that camp, I happily run my Argons on (relatively powerful) portable amps)

Yep something around 3 watts per channel. Any of the THX, LCX with XLR DAC in for extra gain. I also have a HPA-3B with 3.8w. the balanced mod from modhouse is very good regardless if you get an Argon or not.

I have my THX 789 in high gain so that kind of power or higher is best.

unfortunately "send in" the headphone is not a viable solution for everyone.
btw how would you describe the improvements ?

Sound more natural, less nasally. Wider and overall timbre and tonality is improved. The bass is also better but I think the overall sound is just nicer. Don't regret getting it done.

well this is what most of reviewers out there claims see Zeos for example. I'm sure i drive my T60 quite well but i have a 2W per channel amp, no stress i drive Arya with the same ease :)

that's actually a great feedback, agree on that very narrow you said nasally feeling, i will try to see if he can ship only the mod package, otherwise the mayflower one may do the trick as well...

Wrote an email to Fostex, but don't remember if I got a decent reply. I'll purchase a pair of T60RP anytime, but only after I'll have them listen.
However, my actually T50RP-mk3 worth the money for sure, while T60RP has not so good price/perf. ratio.

Just a bit of damping fabric on the backside, so I wouldn't consider them modded.

I so much wanted those wood TP60RP, but it was just not meant to be. I'll probably found them in a local shop and get them, I'll see, but I seriously doubt that Fostex increased their Q&A since last year.

Are the wooden cups available as spare parts?
