EDIT: I just tried these and they're crap. The plastic housing around the USB end of the connector split and came off. I do not recommend these "Effect Audio Studio" connectors.

Thanks for those links! I found two more that are below $100 USD.

I re-set my iDevices and now the regular Apple Dock connector-to-USB cable works with the HP_P1. Sorry for any confusion there.

"What are some other options for short 30-pin to USB cables that aren't expensive? I'd like a backup or two but don't want to spend $100 on a custom cable for digital transport."

Audioquest is making some nice ipod to usb cables from reasonable to pricey. I asked, and they said no on custom (shorter) lengths. I haven't seen them in person so don't know if one could take them apart and shorten them.

If you've followed and discussions or reviews on usb cables, it seems like the best thing you can do is to  isolate the power wire from the data wires. I doubt there are enough HP-P1's in use to warrant someone making a high end version of the docking cable...it's an interesting thought though!

PS Fururtech is also making a cable like audioquest...maybe a Japanese speaker could ask them if they'll do short custom lengths.

Check the for sale threads.  dannytang has been selling some for months it seems.  I purchased one from Moon Audio but it might be expensive with shipping.

For those in Japan, I tried the 'moon and tide' cable at Amazon Japan and can recommend it.

It's well built, just the right size, and uses what seem to be quality components. I will admit I can't hear any difference between it and the OEM Fostex cable but I do admit it's more about form than function (although it needs to work and not break!)

Does a higher quality USB > Dock cable actually make any audible improvements? I'm thinking of getting a long custom cable for use with iPad as well but I'm not sure if the stock apple cable is already good enough.
