Focal Utopia General Discussion

It’s correct. The pricing is now consistent with accessory cables like those included with the Clear and Stellia. The 3.5mm OFC 24 AWG cable is just 1.2m (4 ft) and given the construction and quality of the cable it is worth $85.00 at best. The 4-pin XLR OFC 24 AWG cable is almost twice the length at 3m (10 ft) hence the price difference. I’m not sure why Focal set the pricing for the 6.35mm OFC cable in excess of $1,000 and I suspect that was either an error or wishful. Those cables virtually have no resale value whatsoever and most dealers are now listing them for $700 but selling them for far less.
but how does going from 4ft to 10ft take the prive from $85 to $575. That’s bizarre

unless a store is selling the 3.5mm for $85 i’m thinking there might be an error that is not being fixed on that site.

That’s the correct price. The Stellia 3.5mm OFC 24 AWG cable is also 1.2m (4 ft) and approximately $79.00 from most retailers. It has been well established that Focal’s pricing for accessories like cables and ear pads is like throwing darts.

So I'm sitting upstairs, watching football, sound off, Hugo2go ==> Utopia making noise :)

Get up to do something during halftime, sit back down, press Play, and .... no sound from left side. Oh $h!+

Swap cable sides, and sound from left, not right. Whew! Utopia drivers are OK! But wait, does that mean my Hugo has died?

Switch to another set of cans ... sound from both sides! Yay!

So that means ... my cable failed? Yep, that's what happened. Just sitting there and it failed. So weird.

Definitely a prolonged Oh Crap! moment though.

Phew! Been there. Was it the original Focal cable?
No, a short Lavricable. Seems like the 2.5mm plug has gotten fubar.

Gonna send it off to (hopefully) get fixed.

Well, I joined the Utopia club - I should have them by the end of the week. I've read countless pages of reviews and impressions on the Utopia and can't wait to experience it for myself!

I'll use the factory cable for now, but will look into an aftermarket cable of course, more than likely will go with a moon audio cable. I have a (moon audio cable) for my HD800s and really like it.

I love the "consensus" that it's very revealing and realistic sounding, and that's what I'm looking for. I'll use it for a lot of music transcribing! It's going to be fun!!

Also, like some others have said, it's a nice changeup from the HD800s and they compliment each other.

I have Utopias with a black dragon cable running through a Mytek Brooklyn DAC+. Sounds great. The cable runs from both jacks on the Mytek which sounds fantastic.
I absolutely love the ear pads.

I haven’t seen that before with splitting into 2 jacks. So it dual mono but not really balanced. Does this help with power or separation?

Well for balanced operation we used to have dual 3 pin XLR, before someone decided to use a single 4 pin XLR instead. It existing because there were no standards for balanced headphone outputs at that time. This must simply be the single ended version of it. It's considered to be a legacy connection these days.

Yeah I was confused but that because I do remember amps use to have the two 3 pin XLR and now it’s one 4 pin. But the output on the back is still that. And when getting my Danacable refitted they had the dual 3 pin as an option.

@iamoneagain, the output on the back is because there is a left and right channel. 4 Pins is probably sufficient for balanced left/right headphone output. To make that output on the back go through one cable, you'd need something like a 6 pin XLR (Yes, that does exist.) Also some amps may simply not have another option for balanced headphone output, it's either dual 3 pin or dual 6,3 mm jack in that case, or changing amplifiers.

The Focal Utopia has been in my possession since yesterday. To anticipate one thing, what these headphones do with a music-signal, I cannot put into words...

All statements about the sound are based on the EQ settings of Oratory1990

20210113_054514.jpg

I already had a lot of nice headphones at home, d8000, Empyrean, Stellia, HEDDphone, to name just a few.
But no headphone that I have heard so far, come even close to the Utopia.
In my opinion, Utopia can do magic.
This unbelievable precision and resolution, paired with a nimble and unobtrusive way, is breathtaking.

About the sound stage:
many criticize the relatively small stage.
I do not agree with that. Because the locatability of the instruments, which is divine in Utopia, creates in my opinion, a much nicer "stage-room" than the somewhat diffuse what is called a large soundstage.

This morning before work, I listened to music for an hour, and had a disturbing experience.
As an emotionally dulled guy, i was overwhelmed this morning, when I suddenly had to cry, while listening Xavier Naidoo's live recording of -Mägte und Knechte-

... what has this utopia done to me ...

PS. I would like to highly recommend this album to the Utopia owner

Utopia might cause long-term heart disease due to the excitement it brings.
Better sell it early
