Focal Utopia General Discussion

The OG black cable is excellent, I would never have considered another cable until Focal sent me the new one after an issue with the OG one (it turned out to be a loose connection that I was able to get fixed locally). I had been a cable sceptic until I heard the replacement which is good; just not the tone I want. Thus I have set off on a quest for the Wireworld Nano-Platinum Eclipse, which has been so highly praised on these pages, the problem is it has been discontinued. However, powers that be in this forum have been a big help and I hope to have one very soon. I will credit the source when it arrives along with my own quick review.

I've just started following this thread since I am contemplating a Focal Utopia purchase. Isn't the manufacturer's own cable considered rather special - and quite expensive - so why would more be needed?
I could never understand this myself and used to ask the same exact question 'til I bought the Utopia and tried the Lazuli Reference & Nano-Platinum Eclipse cables with the Utopia, then I understood. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the stock cable, but there is a reason for aftermarket cable companies exist. You would need to hear for yourself.

I’m listening to my new (to me) Lazuli Reference as I’m reading this. Totally agree!

Reply to someone who earlier asked, why replace the Focal cable.

I think Focal's cables all use OFC cooper, and maybe they are silver coated but not sure about that. Silver plated OFC is a good combination when done right. However UP-OCC is apparently the new benchmark. UP-OCC = Ultra-Pure, Ohno Continuous Casting. (Continuous casting I think relates to no joins in the cable, since any connections affect signal.)

Baller!!!

Hate that these new consoles don't have optical ports. What a terrible decision.

I’m thinking that might not be correct in their website as the xlr cable is $575. And the 3,5mm is saying sold out at $85. I wonder if they ever had it
It’s correct. The pricing is now consistent with accessory cables like those included with the Clear and Stellia. The 3.5mm OFC 24 AWG cable is just 1.2m (4 ft) and given the construction and quality of the cable it is worth $85.00 at best. The 4-pin XLR OFC 24 AWG cable is almost twice the length at 3m (10 ft) hence the price difference. I’m not sure why Focal set the pricing for the 6.35mm OFC cable in excess of $1,000 and I suspect that was either an error or wishful. Those cables virtually have no resale value whatsoever and most dealers are now listing them for $700 but selling them for far less.

All this talk regarding the OEM cable motivated me to dig mine out of it's box and reinstall a splitter and some LEMO connectors (I stole the OEM LEMO connectors and splitter for my DIY cable I've been using almost the entire life of the headphones).

I thought I remembered having the 3m version, but it turns out I've got the 4m. I'm also putting together parts for a 3m 16 wire litz UP-OCC cable sometime in the next month or so. I'll have to try and find time to compare them all.

Maybe someday I'll shell out the big bucks for a name-brand cable.

An hour into comparing and initial thoughts are maybe I put the OEM cable aside a bit prematurely. OEM cable has a bit more warmth and bottom end to it as far as I can tell.

The DIY cable was made with wire from Double Helix (Nucleotide V3 24awg stranded OCC copper) that they don't seem to sell anymore, for reference.
