Focal Utopia General Discussion

I like the idea, but is there enough slack/distance on the adapter to avoid the strain on the 2.5mm plug? Also, does the adapter itself influence the sound as well?

When I made my own cable I just used mini 4-pin XLR connectors to connect different termination adapters to the main cable. Works great and I've got options ranging from full size XLR, 3.5 straight, 3.5 R/A, and 6.35.

The Utopia I got from Listening Post; couldn't resist.

Has anyone heard any headphones that do microdetails better than the Utopias (excluding the HD800)?

can't say that i have, but that wasn't the only criterion for choosing the utopia over the hd800 and the sr009

Have the 009S, Utopia and HD800S and for me the 009S has the most detail and this in a very realistic and musical way. Going from 009S to Utopia is sort of shocking as the latter is then shouty and too bright. Not to mention the limited soundstage.

I'd add SR-009 to that list as well.

I’m a bit conflicted .... which do you guys prefer between the 009 v 009S? I lean toward the 009S as it seems just a hair more full bodied. But then there are times the 009 floats my boat.

While I haven't spent too much time with the 900S, I was fairly certain that I prefer the 900S as well. :)

I think that the sound production in good fidelity requires a sufficient level of spring mass to power ratio be very low , where electro stats comes first and then planars with thin membrane.
Those dynamic phones have relatively higher ratio regardless of technologies where utopia has less dynamic mass of Berylium with coreless voice coil, the combined weight of which is still not comparable to the dynamic mass of thin membrane with thin-printed voice traces on it.
This technical limitation is there, so that 009S superiority is easily understandable, even though light weight beryllium cone with floated support and coreless voice coil is regarded as big new way of design to overcome the traditional limitation of dynamic drivers.

When driven well:
- Susvara (treble and midrange detail)
- 1266 Phi and Phi TC (bass and treble mostly)
- Diana Phi's (more of a tossup, and they are picky about synergy when you're trying to max out resolution)
- Mysphere 3 (midrange and treble)
- Raal SR1a
- Stax 007 and 009
- Shangri-La, maybe Shangri-La Jr. but definitely the Sr.
- Shure KSE1500/1200, they need a desktop amp mod to sound their best though.

How would you rank these when it comes to detail? (specially treble and midrange detail?)
