I got the Elex pads in a couple of weeks ago but haven't been able to spend a ton of time with them. However, I saw that the drop was ending in 2 days, so I thought I'd share my experience with them so far to help out anyone that was still on the fence.
The Utopia is my favorite headphone but I've always felt that it could use a little bit more bass. For whatever reason, EQing never left me satisfied, so I searched for other ways to boost the bass. It's part of the reason why I fell in love with the way the Utopia sounds out of the Woo WA7 with EHX Gold Pin tubes. Don't get me wrong, the Utopia has plenty of extension and presents the bass with a ton of detail. In the first minute of
Some Chords - Deadmau5, there's an almost electric bass crackle going on. With the WA7+EHX, you can hear the texture of that crackle with the Utopia. The texture gets drowned out when listening on a neutral solid state amp by the rest of the music.
The Elex pads add just enough bump in the bass that the overall character of the Utopia is not changed so much. I can hear the electric texture in the into of Some Chords. The treble loses some sizzle but not its sparkle. Overall, it brings the Utopia FR closer to that of the Clear, which to me is a good thing, without losing the Utopia's speed and dynamics. At $60 on Massdrop, every Utopia owner should seriously consider picking up a pair.
The Elear pads are a bit of a waste of time. They bring the bass of the Utopia up more than the Elex pads, but kill the upper mids. It's fine when you're listening to EDM or Hip Hop but not really good with anything else. Also, the rougher material on the Elear pads, vs the Elex pads, is a lint and dust magnet and annoying as hell.
