Focal Utopia General Discussion

Twenty years ago, REL subs were competitive. I owned a Storm and a Strata.

IMO, there are literally dozens of better options than REL in 2017. Not saying REL is bad, but they really can't compete with JL, SVS, Funk, Seaton, etc.

Currently have a pair of JL F113s providing bass for a full Focal 5.2 system. The ability to reproduce deep and mid bass is far better than it was with the RELs in the same system.

Recommended music compilation

I would like to compile the great recommended music and put it in the first post of this thread, but I don't want to read through 2500 posts again!

If you have a recommended song or album that shows off the Utopia, please send me private message and I will add it to the list.

Again, please PM me; don't repost your selection.

I've bought a cable from Frank for the sennheiser ie 80 but couldn't hear any difference, think I was asking way too much from the sennheiser ie 80,should of just bought the ie 800

Think you are asking too much from an IE80, I also wouldn't pay for the thousands Kimble Kables want for the silver cables... it is ridiculous to pay for cables that cost more than the headphones..

I hope your opinion is based on trying REL S or G series. the new Ti series is also a very big step up compared to the previous T serie. imo, no sub under 1k can even come close to the rel t5i

About the focal utopia. I have been living with it for a month now with the ifi Pro Ican amp.

I really like the Utopia overall but at 4k I have to find problems. im sad that Utopia is priced at 4k. at 2k, it would have dramatically changed the scene of dynamics headphone.

im not sure about the bass sometimes. I like the bass but I do feel its somehow coloured. the midrange is very detailed but it feels at time that its too forward. Utopia is def not a relaxing HP, its a bit of a forward sound that makes it sooo good but also not imo the most versatile HP. I find that Utopia really likes acoustic records (jazz, classic, classic rock, rock). Im not sure about electronica or pop music with utopia has it really exarcerbates the 'electronic' nature of the sounds and make it sounds often too raw.

I think the Aston Martin One77 is awesome, probably the best car ever made. At $3million it's good but at $100k is way better. Just the motor cost $265k to make ....this logic still confuses me. Some thing's cost more than what some individuals want it to cost. That's often the case with premier products.

agreed.
maybe I badly explained myself. I just think that if focal would have sold the phones at about 2.5k usd, it would have totally transformed the dynamic headphone world for the better, but now its too pricey for most headphone enthousiast.

let me ask you Jason, do you prefer the elear pads on the utopia?

You know when I give you the answer that there will be those that breath fire up my backside don't you? ......No! It's perceived by some that this swap increases bass. In my testing it is the mids & highs being sucked down a tad. ....... Ok before any body blows a circuit this is totally my opinion and in no way implies you'll share the same conclusions .....hahahahaha full disclosure

Note: I'm of the Dan Clark MrSpeaker school of thought. It's my opinion that stratosphere pricing doesn't mean it's a true flagship in terms of performance. As a manufacturer I realize profit is a requirement to keep manufacturing. As a dealer I feel we are interested in profit as well. Toss in a little integrity and realistic pricing and this industry rocks.

The Utopia comes to each of us in steps of performance. During these steps it actually gets better. Depending on your method of break in it really begins to achieve it's real voice. This happens somewhere after 150 hours. With cable pairing it can get better. The better the electronics, the better the Utopia. Do I like the sucking? No. I've stuck with my stock pads to about 400 hours of listening with about 100 hours of continuous program break in. They've got about 500 hours on them now. The pads are a serious part of what a Utopia is. For my ears, to Elear pad a Utopia wasn't a good idea. What happens to the Elear with the Utopia pads is interesting and I endorse that change more readily but still with just a little reluctance. FYI this would not be a good idea for those that feel the bass of the Elear is the correct amount for you. If you feel it's a little bass light, definitely don't concider this option. I feel it allows the stage to open up and the bass is still more than the likes of the HD800/S or others in that category. I'm giving you my opinion ....I resemble these remarks :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
