Yeah it needs EQ if not using cipher cable to sound right. Without EQ or cipher cable, it’s one of the worst in terms of tonality. When done right, the planar driver does sound extremely good. That planar bass is to die for, not even Z1R can come close.
Yes and I would encourage anyone who has the opportunity to try the setup I mentioned earlier (R8 + i4 + cipher + Anker adapter). It’s just in a different league. Funnily enough, when I tried them with Cayin N6ii through it’s USB-C port, I didn’t get the same magic as with R8. N6ii sounds more congested, whereas with R8, I’m hearing the most holographic and 3D soundstage I’ve ever experienced with IEMs (unparalleled height, width and depth). Not to mention its top notch resolution, separation and layering. I did find I only need volume levels between 5-10 with this setup though, much lower than with both balance or SE phone out.
It’s very different than a traditional iem though, as it’s completely open.
lcdi4 is actually one of the few iems I’ve always wanted to try but never have. I wouldn’t buy it because of its open nature and technical idiosyncrasies, but I’ve heard lots of good things about how it sounds and wouldn’t mind hearing it.

How is that even possible? If you're using the Cipher cable then the DAP is just a transport at that point because the cable has its own DAC and amplification. There should be no difference.

I’m also surprised and I did a comparison with N6ii as the source and it does sound different. But I’m also hearing noticeable differences between iPad Pro and iPhone (with the same logic it should also sound the same, correct?). That’s why I said if anyone has the opportunity to try that setup, please do so.

I'm intrigued by something... I'm looking for some iems where electric guitars sound with a good bite... Right now I doubt Lz A7, Dunu Studio and clairvoyance. Could anyone guide me? I really like my Dunu Dk-3001pro, but I need something biter on electric guitars for when I hear hard rock... Perdonen si no es el lugar adecuado para preguntar...
