Hi all,

Has someone tried D8000 with iFi Audio iDSD Pro and could share his feedback ?

I'm looking for a sinmplified setup and hesitate between these and a AK SP1000 which could be more versatile ("carryable").

Thanks

Vincent,
I have not tried them with those but with my Hugo 2 they sound really good. I have an AK240 connected USB to the Hugo 2.
IMO the D8000 likes SS amplifier better. I tried them with the Cayin 300B at RMAF and also with my PrimaLuna Dialogue Premium HP and they sound good but in my MHA100 sound better and in my Enigma are fantastic.

I have the d8000 at home, and listen via a Sony TAZ HES amp. At RMAF, I heard the d8000 driven through the new TOTL Cayin, and it sounded excellent. Also, I had a chance to compare stock cables compared to the Final silver coated upgrade (around $500 for 1.5m). The cables did strengthen the center image while also widening the soundstage. I did hear a bit more high frequency detail also. With my mellow Sony, I feel they will be worth the money. The Cayin sounded more dynamic than my amp. I also preferred the upgraded cable there.

BTW, Micheal Brown of Final USA is a joy to be around. He is knowledgeable and very enthusiastic.
Final's table location at RMAF was less than ideal though.

How do they compare to your Stax and Focal Utopias?

Utopia sounds more dynamic. There's more texture across the frequencies to me.

D8000 has rounder soundscape and Utopia throws a space that sounds more accurate to the recording and depth layering changes more depending on the recording. Imaging sounds more pinpoint on Utopia. Utopia is more holographic but D8000 is no slouch.

D8000 has a warmer overall character that makes it sound fuller. Slightly less space between notes. Its a funner sound for me and works better for pop/rock, rap, r&b, electronic. I listen to a lot of vocal focused music and I'm not sure I can pick a winner here - depends on my mood. Planer vocals done right is great. If I want to hear all the nuances and texture of mids, I reach for Utopia. If I want to more easily pleasant mids with more smoothness and liquidness and sweetness, and still with good texture, I will reach for D8000. The transient attack and decay is shorter with Utopia so edges are slightly more defined and agressive.

Similar to the HD800 I have to pay attention more when listening to the Utopia compared against D8000. I have to commit to listening to the Utopia whereas D8000 is easier to get along with for different genres and recording quality. I reach for D8000 more than Utopia but at their very best I may prefer Utopia if I'm more critically listening.

How do they compare to the STAX SR 900 and Hifiman 1000V2 or SE??

I am always a bit hesitant to write comparisons, since everbody has a different set of ears and listens to things differently .
I am not to familiar with the Hifiman, but I have a Stax 009S and I feel that the D8000 sounds a bit more balanced without loosing out too many details. Hope that helps.

I agree 100% with hop ham's assessment. The D8000 and the Utopia are different animals that I think they complement each other.

Sold the D8000 some months ago, but still have HEKv2 and 009. So the following is a bit out of my (fading) audio memory and comparison was done on tube amps. so may be the D8000 performs differently on SS:

May be I'm too much used to the "traditional audiophile voicing". The D8000 had too much bass for me. For my taste I had to EQ it down bye at least 2-3 db (and I really prefer to not use EQ) At the same time there was a kind of treble peak (around 8k?). Somehow both things felt not so well connected overall to my ears.

HEKv2 has bass and treble energy too, but it feels better integrated to me. Sometimes I would like to have a tiny bit less treble energy, but overall I really like the imaging and somehow special way of the presentation. I can listen and enjoy the HEKV2 for quite a while.

The 009 sounds less warm and had less bass quantity in this comparison. But bass quality is very good, it's super fast and the bass can hit very hard (right amping is important) And I really like the smooth treble, but here as well I sometimes would like to have a little bit less treble energy (still waiting for the 009S to arrive).

All these headphone sounds different and at least my brain need some time to adapt when switching between them.

All in all the D8000 is not a bad headphone either. if bass is your top priority it worth to give it a try.
