Well, although I must respectfully disagree with several of your opinions there, I will certainly agree re' the second screen.

I'm open to being educated as to the efficacy of this second screen, so if there's logic that I'm just missing I'd welcome anyone enlightening me.
But my first reaction is to echo your facepalm, sorry James :(

Am guessing here but as far as I understand this, you can choose to operat the player with one or the other display, saving battery life when choosing the small one.

To save battery power you can turn the diplay off! Basta!

That did occur to me, but the trade-off to save a tiny bit of power seems unsupportable.
Surely the room taken by the extra screen could be used instead for some extra battery size/capacity.
I doubt many of us regularly use the screen for extended periods of time, and if we did wouldn't extensive screen use be much more comfortable/satisfying on the bigger screen anyway?

Edit for clarity, this reply was intended for Koolpep

The more I know about the X7, the more I'm glad to own the X5 and the E12DIY.

I've no need for second screens, bluetooth or other gimmicks. I'll wait for the result and decide then. In doubt are there other devices.

Just in this moment I haven't the "want have and want have it now" feeling.

The back of X7, btw, we have two option, maybe it is not easy to find the different, but you can see the difference is the screen, one is flat , another is not, the screen is little lower!

James, why AMOLED and not E-Ink for the rear display?

The issue is probably more about commercial availability of such a small screen, in which case, AMOLED may be the only option available.

Still think it's an unnecessary gimmick to have 2 screens on a DAP, though.

I have lost track as to what this unit is supposed to have.  Can anybody offer up a quick recap of where we think we are?

By the way, Engadget just gave props to the X5 as a desirable audio toy.   They also liked a $100 unit that looked fairly inferior to the X1 to my thinking.

Wi-Fi
Bluetooth
Swappable amp modules
2 screens

Draw your own conclusions about whether that seems like an audiophile product.

Frankly, I'm really not convinced, at this point, what the design ethos is behind the X7.

Hmm... the slider and switch dissapeared, but not bad.

Those actually looked very good.

I like the edges are not sharp.

It looks a bit small (too small? seems like something can be added like extra battery power), hopefully the oled screen stays there as other things from previous screen ;-)

Finally: Thank you for getting here to forum and negotiating the features, its quite appreciated!

Well, I guess time to count down for pre-orders time!

Awww, I actually loved the brushed gold look

@originalsnuffy - this might be a little more useful for you ..... from an earlier post by alnilam

  1. Dimension: 128x16x64mm (this may have changed - refer pic below from James)
  2. Screen: 3.97 inch full touch IPS (this may have changed - refer pic below from James)
  3. Battery life: > 8 hours
  4. Battery: 3700mAh
  5. Hardware buttons: power, play/pause, previous/next, volume+/- and one secret bottom
  6. Input/Output interface:
    - microSD slot x 1
    - micro USB x 1
    - 3.5mm Line Out
    - coaxial output
    - Headphone out x 1, the output jack will change from 3.5mm output jack
    - 4 pin balanced output ( same as ALO/RSA ), depended on the headphone amp module
  7. Built in memory: 32 GB - may also be a more expensive Pro model with up to 128Gb
  8. Wifi/Bluetooth support
  9. DAC: ESS9018 X 1, ESS9018 already includes 8 channels DAC so it does not need 2 DAC chips
  10. OP and Buf for AMP, depended on headphone amp module
  11. Output power and power supply: depend on the amp module
  12. SoC: RK3188
  13. Built in memory: 32GB
  14. RAM: 1GB
  15. Price ~ $699
  16. Android based OS - should be options to add audio apps.

Front

Back (still sorting options)

With the options chosen - still seems to be (to me anyway) a pretty good concept for an audiophile DAP - matching hardware for sonics with reasonable options for wide ranging useability.  The wifi should be good for streaming. The bluetooth for use in a vehicle, or with BT speakers/headsets.

From what I have already tried (and owned) of Fiio products, I think they're doing a great job of trying to meet as many needs as possible.
