To be future proof it might be smart to integrate BT and Wifi. I am now exploring the FLAC streaming from Tidal - not shabby at all and since that (unfortunately) seems to be the future, to stream music and subscribe rather than download and "own", it might not be a bad move.
Not arguing with your observation that the music industry may be headed that way (and no longer arguing about Bt/Wi-fi being in the X7, as I am now resigned to it in the X7), but I detest the subscription model with a passion and will avoid
at all costs. It's another nail in the coffin of privacy, for starters.
Theoretically-speaking, I would rather have seen the X7 designed with the Bt and Wi-fi as an optional module, so that those who have no need of it need not unnecessarily carry it around in the DAP.
That kind of modularity, where the
feature is added or subtracted by the user, would've been a cool approach
Swappable amps are following the 901 and I think too that is a great opportunity to keep the player relevant for multiple uses down the line, large headphones, great. IEMS, different module, sounds as good...
I agree that swappable amp modules are a useful feature

I certainly appreciate the effort and am looking forward the release...I doubt it will be a jack of all trades and master of none, I am sure James has enough experience to avoid this pitfall.
It's a tricky issue, isn't it? There are multi-million dollar corporations already producing cellphones with multi-functionality, and a boatload of cash to throw at R&D, inching (admittedly slowly) towards improved SQ, but with all the other fancy gizmo features pretty-much already sorted.
Maybe, when a company
doesn't have several million dollars to throw at R&D, there might be some logic in doing their core speciality (in this case, audiophile functionality) as well as they possibly can, and keeping bells & whistles to a minimum.
It's a difficult line to draw in the sand, when there is so much competition, on both sides of the line, and a moderately-sized company is trying to innovate in order to compete.
Even though I may not personally approve of some of the design decisions, I respect James for being intrepid, and, as I've said many times before, on Head-fi, I respect him for courageously engaging with the community, even though it can get very rambunctious at times
