Bumping this with a question. How is the sound of this thing, and do you think it's a good bet pre-owned at €250?

There's a large amount of info on the sound. Basically warm, smooth, relaxing, soft
It should be killer value at 250 Euro, if it is in very good condition. Assuming you're from Europe since you talk about Euros, the price is good.

Will have a look at the write-up tomorrow - and I'm planning to pick up the X5iii at the weekend if I can get out to where it's in stock. New, boxed and all is like €389 or something so that's a decent discount! Thanks for the tip

Hi,
I'm considering to purchase this DAP. I have a question regarding the "balanced output":
Do you need a special adapter to connect the typical 3.5mm mini-jack of any IEM to the 2.5mm socket in the X5? Or does it fit properly without an adapter? Or do you actually need to purchase a "balanced cable" and switch the cable in your current IEM?

You need a balanced cable you can get adapters that allow a 2.5 balanced plug to 3.5 SE but you cannot adapt 3.5 SE to 2.5 balanced. This DAP has both 3.5 and 2.5 mm sockets

Thanks for your comment HungryPanda. Ok, so is there any consensus as to what might be a good MMCX balanced cable and where to purchase it (ideally in Europe)?

Sel
Self reply: yes, there are plenty available via Amazon. Now there is one more choice: on some of them it says 2Pin-MMCX cable and in others it just says MMCX cable. What's the difference and what would be the best?

Oh, ok, I get it now. Thanks a lot for your help HungryPanda.
Is it possible to run newer versions of Android on this, with or without rooting? From what I can tell it uses 5.1 Lollipop by default, wondering if there's the possibility of support of 6.0 Marshmallow or 7.0 Nougat? @Dobrescu George You might know something about this?

As far as I know, it isn't possible to install newer android versions, but I remember the folk with Filderizer had something in works that may work

OK, thanks for clarifying
I just registered to thank jkbuha for the kernel, it's a great improvement, it feels more fluid and stable.
I'm really grateful
these instructions served me, I followed them and it worked perfect.In the zip file there is an executable androidtool.exe and driverinstall,
Brief instructions:
- Unzip twrp-2.8.5.0-X5.zip, install drivers (run DriverInstall.exe);
- Power off the X5, connect it to the computer via USB while holding the Previous track button.
- Start AndroidTool.exe, make sure that only checkbox #2 is checked and LOADER device is found;
(for flashing stock recovery just untick #2 checkbox and choose #3 - recovery_stock.img).
- Press <Run> button, wait till flash operation is completed;
- Go to Advanced function tab and click <ResetDevice> button.
- We're done.
To enter custom recovery:
- Power off the X5;
- Push Previous track button, Play/Pause Button and Power button simultaneously.
- Wait 5 sec, release Power button;
- Wait till logo appears and then release all buttons.
This is how i put twrp on my fiio x5iii.
If you have the SU file put on the root directory or sdcard, and install through twrp.
See if this gets you there.
I'm really grateful
