Do you guys hear any real difference between flac and DSD files? I asked because I don't—maybe my hearing is not that accurate? I have owned Fiio X5iii for more than a year, I usually pair it with Final Audio Design Pandora Hope IV cans.

If it’s the same master, and you listen at the same volume, you won’t hear a difference. It has nothing to do with your headphones.

Hi, I received my brand new X5iii Saturday evening and gave it a quick listen. Not bad sounding at all, a little harsh but for out of the box it was pleasant. What was kinda weird was the little glitches that the player seemed plagued with and I concur that 1.2.1 seems to be buggy. It's like the player has a life of its own. When I pause the music, I am expecting to restart where I left it but not with Mr X5iii, he decides on a different song from a different artist! I guess that's what can be called a super shuffle! Yesterday I played with it more installed Poweramp and hiby music player. Poweramp seems to lag a lot on this player, so I switched to hiby. Hiby works reasonably well can't complain about it. Today I bought USB player pro and while I like the sound and the simplistic UI, my hardware buttons don't seem to have any effect on UPP. I can't pause unless I touchscreen the pause button. Am I missing something ?
Then I realized how slow the player was, it's usable but since I am using a galaxy S9 everyday, the difference is striking... This afternoon I flashed fidelizer rom 1.2.1 and that improved the speed. The sound was also more pleasing but that can be the burn-in effect as well. I wanted moaarr speed (insert Jeremy Clarkson's voice) and I tried to install the custom kernel distributed this summer. I tried because I couldn't even install TWRP recovery. Any complete tutorial is welcome!
I ended up flashing fidelizer 1.1.9 tonight because people claim that it's less buggy. I am going to give it a test now and will report later.
Don't get me wrong I am happy with the device and I knew what I was getting into. I am sure some extra performance/enjoyment can be squeezed out of it, I just have to keep digging!

I'm using the 1.2.1 firmware and have UAPP installed. To get the side buttons on the X5III and android buttons on headphones to work, go into settings in UAPP. Go into android audio and put a check mark on play through android. Turn the X5III off. When you turn it back on the side buttons on the player and android buttons on your headphones will work. I also go into user interface and check play next album/folder so when one album finishes the next one will play. Keeps you from pulling it out of your pocket every time an album finishes.

Firmware version 1.2.1 also gives me problems. The player works slower and crashes occur.
Any solution? Return to the previous version or is it possible that Fiio solve it?

You could send the crash folder from internal_sd\FiiOMusic\crash to support@fiio.com for check. And also the operation when the issue happens.

As a rule, I tend not to bitch and/or moan about small tech issues with this device, but I am now losing my patience in a big way. As a follow up to my previous post, I was just listening to a track on the 2nd card, when all of sudden it stopped playing. I looked at the screen and it said I had 0 files on that card. Okay so I rescanned the card; and it still shows 0 files (this in in Folder view), but when I drill down, all the sub-folders (i.e., N-P Q-Z, and all the subsequent artist sub-folders) are present, as are all the tracks.

If I use an alternate search (i.e., song title, artist, genre, etc.) nothing appears.

This is getting quite frustrating.

I was thinking they may be able to lend a helping hand with the files, maybe there is a tag or something that induces errors (?)

Hey Fiio, I am on the 1.1.9 fidelizer rom and yesterday evening I got offered an update of the Fiio music app on the playstore. I accepted the update, fiio music is now 1.0.4 but now I can't reboot in pure music mode! Looks like the update replaced the other fiio music app or messed up the system . Do you guys want a log or something before I go back to another 1.2.1 ?

I did find the guides but couldn't make it to work on 1.1.9 using two methods. I will flash 1.2.1 today and give it another try. Thanks

One of two possibilities:
1) You're not in bootloader mode -> adb reboot bootloader or power+back+play for 30sec
2) Your OS does not have the correct drivers, highly unlikely in macOS/Linux, quite likely in Windows.

The FiiO Music APP in play store is for mobile phone instead of the X5III.
You could do a factory restore for help instead.
