I took UAPP off in the end. Too slow and laggy. It was 4.2.3 full version.

Yes, on x5iii everything is slow and laggy.
Unlike on V20.

Can’t comment on V20, but not surprised, you’re comparing a modern smartphone with a DAP. I personally don’t find the X5iii that cumbersome with Pure Music, so I’m quite happy with the X5iii. I tried UAPP on your recommendation. Sadly (for my preferences) I wasted my money. Am sure it’s a good app with more modern Android releases / devices. Interface was ok. But I’ll stick with Pure Music and Neutron.

I think we need a war clock that counts up from the last time X5iii is paired up against the V20 in this thread. *Yawn*

I think it's possible to have a refund for your uapp purchase. I've read about it so give it a try.
As for dap, if you're happy, cool! Me, i was sick of lag, crashes and waiting for various features to run. I also needed EQ on tidal and permanent internet connection so uapp on v20 is perfect. It is not bug free but unlike fiio, uapp's developers fix things quickly. There is a huge head fi thread where they directly debate problems and...fix them!
There is no war but yes comparison with others, true. I was excited when i got x5iii then quickly realised how many issues it has.

I have V30 and it does sound good but I stick to daps to listen to music so it is not interrupted with notifications dropping the volume

Wouldn't a DAP produce much better audio quality, even for those without golden ears?
Better is subjective. It will depend on your current phone model and which DAP you are upgrading to.

Some phones like the LG V30 already sound great and you'd likely have to go above 300 dollars before you find a better sounding DAP.

Golden ears? Haven't heard that term in a long time haha :p
I would say hearing improvements has to do with experience.

Think wine, an experienced taster would be able to diffenciate between a $300 wine and a $500 wine but a casual drinker couldn't tell the difference between a $50 wine and a $1000 one.

A DAP does produce better sonic results to those ears, at least going from Mi Max 2 to virtually any DAP, but my smartphone really doesn't have a nice HO.

T580 from Samsung, on the other hand, sounds quite impressive with IEMs, but darn it has very little power, sounds weak even with IE800, it does not go loud enough for my ears, so cannot use it alone either, needs a DAC/AMP

Funnily enough I have a M Max 2, and find the sound a bit muffled even with my potato ears!
