I've been reading that using UAPP improved the sound of the X5iii.

I'm curious how it "improves", what's the difference sonically?
I have both...i buyed N and U long ago.... the usbap- dont know about mp3 - but dsd -sure neutron sounds different... also volume is different -all settings affecting sound off.... dont know what i like better ... but USBAP - is with dsds very laggy, slow, Neutron is very fast, also changing tracks, time - and it supports Native playback of dsd with fiio HW -tested with friend Yaslam and N DEV ---- IT SEEMS only fiio app and Neutron can native play Dsds.... The usbap -shows sometimes different frq as Neutron - bitperfect on/ when possible.... it seems USBAP converting DSD64 to 352000hz PCM as my fried Yaslam wrote me... With mp3s - i think there is no difference, not sure ---need more time to try... but Usbap gets every 2 days /to time/ a update... looking for this player.. iam glad something/someone making progress .... the UI in USBAP is much better as before.. ALSO -iam using both today --loading tracks with 2x256 gb cards was good, i think faster then earlier versions of fiio m ap... happy i can choose... yes the fiio app have i disabled :)

I said it on other posts, fiio music app has many issues, some things do not work and the sound is inferior to what i get from uapp. Also eq on uapp is better and is applied when streaming from tidal.

I have the latest version (4.1.8) of USB Audio Player Pro (UAPP) installed on my X5III. Last night I had one of the most, if not the most, enjoyable listening sessions I've had using the X5. Especially Tidal--for me using UAPP is a vastly better way of listening to Tidal on the FiiO than the Tidal Android app. With the dedicated UAPP Hi Res driver, the sound is fantastic! Even listening to my MQA playlists, which the internal DAC plays at 48000/24 bit and, obviously, aren't unfolded all the way to MQA without a USB Audio hook-up to an MQA DAC, the sound is stunning. Listening to Tidal's regular 44100 HiFi tracks is also great. UAPP also successfully scanned and plays the music from both local SD cards and the sound is excellent, although I didn't compare it directly to Pure Sound. A very cool thing UAPP does is it takes the album art from an individual album and and creates a custom color match in the players outside borders. For $9.99 you just can't go wrong with UAPP, just an amazing amount of functionality for a nominal price.

I second your opinion, UAPP gives better sound. And i do not claim, i just feel it this way, or my ears hear it is better than fiio music app. Not only this but i said it more than once, eq of fiio does nothing, viper eq leftmost band, 31 hz, also does nothing, eq on uapp is more efective and ofers cleaner control of sound, viper eq has lower impact. Not that i over boost frequencies but i like some extra treble and bass, a wide U shape sound i would say. In this way i get a cleaner and fuller sound and uapp does it better.
All in all it works for me. As for internal DSP, i wouldn't care as long as this is the result i get. I tried bit perfect and the sound was also very good. Very few differences if any when compared to non-bit perfect.

The advantage something like UAPP has is sales promote its development and that alone, FiiO has a whole business to fund. It makes no sense to drag FiiO music through the mud, like some golden-eared listeners are too good for the stock app. Is the hi res audio sticker plastered over my album art in UAPP necessary? No. Is it removable? No. Are the multiple library views welcome? Yes. But some of the "sort by" options are applied inappropriately to all other views. I want to view albums within an artist by descending release date, but unfortunately this makes viewing all albums by themselves descending in release date. Viewing songs within an album requires an unnecessary swipe up to view all songs, you can only barely see the first song listing. Why??

/Rant

No app is perfect.

I think UAPP offers better sound than Foobar, but I don't think it is any better than the Fiio app. And the Fiio app may have an edge as it lets you choose from four settings for the DAC.

Here we go:

You can download TWRP (custom recovery) for FiiO X5-III here.
SuperSU package (root) for installing through TWRP is here.

Brief instructions:
- Unzip twrp-2.8.5.0-X5.zip, install drivers (run DriverInstall.exe);
- Power off the X5, connect it to the computer via USB while holding the Previous track button.
- Start AndroidTool.exe, make sure that only checkbox #2 is checked and LOADER device is found;
(for flashing stock recovery just untick #2 checkbox and choose #3 - recovery_stock.img).
- Press <Run> button, wait till flash operation is completed;
- Go to Advanced function tab and click <ResetDevice> button.
- We're done.

To enter custom recovery:
- Power off the X5;
- Push Previous track button, Play/Pause Button and Power button simultaneously.
- Wait 5 sec, release Power button;
- Wait till logo appears and then release all buttons.

The guide about using TWRP is here.

Enjoy!

Thank you.

Hi, quite late to the party here but just stumbled upon this. Have recently acquired X7 and was looking for ways to install TWRP, I did not find something specifically for X7 but I thought the files linked here should work, after all X7 and X5-III use the same processor and software is roughly the same on both.

I have tried installing TWRP, looks like I am partially successful in the sense that the tool recognizes my X7 (of course, button combination for entering in flashing mode is different) and I am able to flash TWRP. Where I am stuck is accessing TWRP after flashing, or at least displaying it: the most I got to is a blank screen (X7 boots in what should be recovery mode I assume, nothing is displayed on the screen). Any plans for adapting this to X7, suggestions on what I should be doing different (buttons combination for accessing TWRP?) etc.?

Thanks

So ... I have a FLAC file that is showing under audio properties on my pc: 1,411kbps / 16 bit / 44.1kHz.
On playback, Fiio shows: 716kbps / 16 bit / 44 kHz - that's half the kbps.
Dear friend,

You could provide the files you mentioned for confirming for you as well. Thanks in advanced!

Best regards

@FiiO

What's your opinion with regard to this matter?
Will you deal with this issue about X5 3rd, X7, X7 mkii?

Dear friend,

Firstly thanks for your sharing this news with us.
Actually, we already have known this recent news and will keep paying attention to it. As a formal manufacturer, we always try to comply with the relevant international standards and policies.
And we will continually hold our tenet of "being responsible for the customers" , and make adjustments when appropriate.

Been reading through the pages and looks like it’s been a while since anyone has asked about offline Tidal in the X5iii. Seems like it works decently well from what I’ve read. Anyone have any nuance to add that I should be aware of if I’m looking to get one soon?

@FiiO
Since you include Viper on the X5, why not include an IRS (Impulse Response Curve) for your new X9Pro IEM's? Seems like a natural match??? Or can you provide an IRS for download and adding to the X5?

@FiiO
I sent you files earlier with cover art issue and have not yet heard back from you. Have you found a solution to the problem?

Dear friend,

Not sure if you are talking about the f9pro as we don't have the product called X9Pro?

We have already reported your issue to our engineer. They will have a check about that. Will inform you if we receive any feedback or requirement from them. Sorry for bringing inconvenience to you.

Best regards

Yeah I'm pretty sure he's talking about the F9 Pro.

An X9 Pro sounds intriguing though. TOTL-Killer at $1000 with SQ rivalling desktop setups.
