  Finally they improved its design!

but its price increased by $100 more.

For $399, you can buy Pioneer XDP 100R on Amazon...

I would never choose Fiio over Pioneer.

I was happy with its better exterior design but its pricing spoiled it.  People, buy XDP 100R for the same price. XDP 100R is now $5 cheaper than X5.

XDP 100R is still much superior to X5 ... maybe X5 6th gen will be better.

Haha, are you on Pioneers payroll or what?

Anyway this is the FiiO X5 3rd generation thread => please try and compare that one with the XDP 100R first and than come back with a usefull opinion.

Sadly its touchscreen excludes the X5 III from portable use in my case (jogging, walking), so the X3 II will have to do (and does a good job at it). But it could be a replacement for my now X5 II as the digital source feeding my Chord DAVE DAC, where the USB sound output would be welcome. On the other hand I would possibly still be better off with a compact Windows-based tablet computer with foobar2000 (and xnor's sophisticated equalizer there).

@JamesFiiO: Finally easy access to the equalizer, as it seems. Could you tell some details about it? Same configuration as in X3 II and X5 II, thus 10 bands with a width of 1 octave each? Will it work with higher sampling rates, such as 96 or 192 kHz?

Why? It has play/pause and next/last song buttons above and below the volume knob

Really? I'm new to this thread and haven't read everything so far. That indeed changes my perspective. Thanks!

Well, to be honest I also didn't notice it at first. But @ClieOS explained it to me over here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/828402/fiio-x5-3rd-gen-2x-akm-4490-balanced-out-dsd-dxd-dts-android-dual-card-slot-mastering-quality-audio/435#post_13103044
and when you look at the pics in the first post you can clearly see the buttons.

If it didn't have these buttons it would have been a deal breaker for me too

I hope the x5 mIII is hiss free. The x7 hissed so much even at low gain with ES60.

Not particularly X5III related, but this can be a saver for hiss-prone IEM.

Using it now with LG v20. iEmatch works great. I just feel a dedicated DAP should account for the most sensitive IEMs with needing an adapter.

That caught me out, too, until I saw a different angle, and higher-resolution, pic, and the buttons were more clearly visible:

What about price in EU ?

The fair price would be £323 or 383euro but it won't be a fair price like usual everyone outside the USA will get stung on pricing and will have to pay something closer to 550 dollars. This is when it stops being good fiio value and then you might as well pay a bit more and get a more expensive player because the difference becomes much smaller after the price raping.
