Yes, that's precisely why I use the sub and happily, it turns out that since the bottom octave is external, I get the best of both worlds. The incredible detail and imaging of the k1k's and the visceral impact of the external sub. It's VERRRRRY satisfying. I cross it in at 45Hz.

If you look at the FR curve for the k1k's, you'll see that it is ruler flat down to just below 50Hz. I wouldn't call that "lacking bass" but the rest of their response is so perfectly flat that it is obvious with the right music, that the bottom octave is missing. The sub adds that back in perfectly.

Joelongwood, how would you say the ETYs compare to the Grado HP-1?

Voyager, I just did a rather brief A/B last night using the Etys and HP-1s.........and the winner is............................too close to call!
After listening to the Etys for a few days straight, I decided to see how they would compare to the Grados. I've been listening (as usual) to acoustic vocals, mostly female. When I slipped on the Grados, I was immediately struck by the much wider soundstage that they provided. The sound was wonderful, as always, but I did notice that the bass, while deep and tight, was not as musical as the Etys. I don't think "muddy" is the right term, but in direct comparison to the Ety's bass, it's the best description I can come up with. Both headphones are exceptionally smooth performers, with no emphasis on any one part of the frequency spectrum. The vocals were beautiful on both, but, to my ears, the Etys seemed more realistic in this regard......but it was pretty damned close. Although the HP-1s are highly detailed, they don't quite come up to the level of the Etys, as far as I can hear.
I would say that the sonic signature of these two headphones is much closer than say, that of any other non-Grado phone I have in comparison to the Grado HP-1.
Both are extremely detailed and smooth, with the nod for the size of the soundstage going to the Grados.
It's been said many times that Sennheisers put you in the audience, while Grados put you onstage. Well, these Etymotics put the music inside you.

Is there a place I could try out a pair?
I'm in seattle BTW.

Well, you could order them from Headroom, one of the sponsors of this site. They offer a 30 day free trial period.......you'ld only be out the shipping if you returned them. If you do order them, I don't think they would be going back anytime soon, IMHO.

Lets say someone whoes headphone opinions you respect made a negative comment about how the Ety's sound, and then it turned out they made that comment because they couldnt get their hands on one! That would not look good. Thats the position HeadRoom takes in regards to Sony, and thats a bone I have to pick with them. HeadRoom, supposedly the internet authority and specialists in headphones and headphone gear, says even the Sony CD3000 isnt up to snuff sonically, when in reality it is their own inability to come to a distributor agreement with Sony which is why they dont carry their cans. That they claim Sony doesnt make an outstanding headphone- equal to the best thats out there- instead of owning up to the fact that Sony's distributor contract drove too high of a bargain, is dishonest.

This relates to the Ety inasmuch as you would trust HeadRooms objective description of their sound, which you clearly dont need to do with all the people around here anyway. Use them for their return policy by all means, but I dont trust them as far as I could throw them.

Headroom doesn't carry Sony products cause if they want to carry the V6 and the CD3000, they'll have to also carry all the other **** Sony managed to produce and Headroom didn't feel like doing that.

Joe, since the Ety music is inside your head, I would guess that it caused more fatigue than your other headphones. I am curious how fatiguing do you found your Ety 4S is?
