Yeah, I've seen this too. She is good IMO, but that doesn’t change the general sentiment .
I'm with you, there's generally much more for me to love about older music, but mainly because I'm old (and sentimental). Music can't be separated from emotion, it's all about the emotion, and we each bring our own emotional baggage to the hobby (so to speak).

Of course, some folks are in it mainly for the love of the gear and measurements, which is a different story altogether. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's relevant to the discussion since the music almost becomes incidental then.

That's why I don't get it when someone expects a high-end IEM to sound great with all types of music. Doesn't work that way, sadly.
Oooof I'd heavily disagree with this personally. Every IEM in my signature sounds between great and decent with literally anything I play on it - it's become one of my main criteria where TOTL IEMs are concerned, I can't have something over 1000 that makes half my library unlistenable (mostly because I consider the 1000$ category the "specialist" category)

I don't get the whole "it's not the IEM's fault" when it's literally a tuning choice - plenty of people love very revealing and bright gear, and they can tailor their whole libraries to that, but that does not make it any less the IEM's fault, it just means the user took a bunch of steps to overcome an issue with the gear. It's a bit like saying that every SUV is useless because all roads need to be perfect or else there's no point in going on them

On the whole measurements topic.. yeah a graph won't tell you how technical something is but in 95% of the times I can tell whether I'd like or dislike something based on the 2k/6k/8k/10k sections alone

DR5 is DR5 , no way to sugarcoat it sorry chief :xf_cool: - i can send you hundred of spartan albums that have DR north of 10-11

but if this makes you happy , then good for you i guess

in the end , it comes down to what kind of sound/production our ears are used to

someone mentioned some pages back that st anger by metallica sounded bad , this album sounds like banging trashcans one of the worst mastering albums released in the last 30 years (i think it has a DR 3 ? just atrocious), like i said - try as much you want, there is no way to make a (sonic) turd taste (sound) like candy
The thing to remember is: Many many albums ARE simply mastered in crappy quality. For instance all Metallica ones. I have them all. I was always disappointed by them not being able to release a single well mastered album with all their money and Rick Rubin in the background. It is what it is. If you love the music, you hardly have a choice. But yes, I do prefer very good masterings as much as you do.

So true.

I actually agree with you there, but my point was more generalised to say that not every $3K IEM will be perfect with all music types and can't be expected to either (because music tastes and genres and hearing range so broadly). It's almost impossible to tune an IEM to cover every single music type known to man (and then suit everyone's preferences). So it's more about us picking our TOTL IEMs based on our music choices (as you've done) versus expecting every high-end IEM to just work. To that point, I've chosen my personal IEMs because they work well with the majority of my music, but there have been many expensive IEMs I've heard that just don't work for me for the same reason. I also find value in having more than one IEM to cover any bases the others don't.

let's get back to discussing those EE iems

however and once more again , i will ask people who say 'today's music is as good if not better than what it was in the 70s' to read my '100 albums' list and answer me these 2 questions please

1) how many of the 100 albums i posted , they have heard extensively/like
2) propose albums made in the last 5 years that can look straight in the eyes without flinching, most of the albums in my list

i find Billy Eilish boring and overrated , but (and this is a huge but) i say this using as a reference point some female artists like Laurie Anderson / Joni Mitchell / Kate Bush / Goldfrapp

in the end taste is subjective , and this is not an elitist thing

some people adore N' Sync , some adore Billy Eilish , some adore Steely dan - everyone's (brain) wired differently and this is the beauty of music - there is something out there for everyone of us

I took the liberty of suggesting some small changes to your post.

I enjoy Billie Eilish, Joni Mitchell and Goldfrapp with both LX and EVO. Which of those do I prefer for repeat listens? Billie, although none are directly comparable and I enjoy them for different reasons. Purely personal taste.

Edit: @MatW I saved you the time 😁

Don't agree with this at all. There's a reason some modern cheap pop is mastered for bass-heavy consumer cans and car stereos. Put that same music through EVO or Odin and be ready to have your ears raked over hot coals.
I was not talking about tuning synergy with certain genres.
There will always be tryhard cheap version of Odin and EVO attempts or at least similar. And they will sound horribly.
Lets compare apples to apples.

There are plenty good quality song that EVO and Odin will play out bad too on certain genres. Just not worse then cheapos.

You know, being able to separate better and having better resolution will always help out the track.

Again, Im not saying its optimal.
