Empire Ears - Discussion & Impressions (Formerly EarWerkz)

EE are having a promo during NAMM. 15 percent off using the code "WISHIWASTHERE". Iems only it seems.

Nice, but with a new Phantom and newer Tia Trio in the house, I am done with IEMs. Dap upgrade is next.

Thanks Layman1 & Tristy

I obviously do not need to enhance the bass on the LX, but I would like to bring vocals out a bit more and give a tiny bit more to the high end (not too much though as I can be a bit sensitive to high treble.) There is an Ares II and a Lionheart for sale here that are interesting me.

I'd have to agree with @proedros here and suggest you may want to think about a different cable from those two option you mentioned.
I also saw that they were on sale, but my feeling here is that you may want a cable with rather different characteristics than those two offer.

Whilst I haven't heard it yet personally (but will soon!) Electech's Prudence could offer something a bit different at a similar price point ($249):
https://elementechnology.com/collections/virtues-series/products/prudence

@Deezel177 posted his impressions previously on Head-Fi, and I'll quote a sample here for you: "wonderful cleanliness, clarity and air. It had a pristine, serene and calming presence that came across graceful, effortless and light-on-its-feet. If it makes any sense, it sounded like a ballet recital, or a drummer doing butterflies on cymbals and hi-hats. It simply gave instruments this light, feathery-touch, but without becoming lethargic or sterile. Again, the cable had that tactile sort of texture I’d described earlier, that kept instrument sounding solid and corporeal. The midrange I thought was very nicely balanced with good body to the low-mids. And, the top-end was really rounded, rich and analog-sounding whilst - again - maintaining that sense of air. It’s almost like a baby Illiad in tone, really, and I’d surmise that it pairs most ideally with in-ears that are inherently dynamic or powerful-sounding".

I've seen you on posted Eletech's thread, so I know you will know who to reach out to for further details. They mentioned they might be doing a special offer after the upcoming Chinese New Year hiatus, so that's another bonus to motivate you :p

Otherwise, the Effect Audio Eros II ($279) could be worth a listen, as it combines copper and silver cables together and I think should maybe help to achieve the results you're looking for.

I actually reached out to Paul Zhang recently. I'd heard both Legend X and Nemesis extensively, and had finally chosen the Nemesis.
However, they have more similarities than differences, so my comments should still be helpful here.
I said I loved the Nemesis, but (like you) wished that I could add a bit more air, extension and lift to the high end, and upper mids.

Now my case is a bit different from yours, as I'd already purchased my Nemesis with a thicker gauge Ares II+.
So he recommended converting it into a thicker gauge Eros II+ (effectively just adding a Thor II+ to my existing cable).
It will be a beast of a cable, but I'm excited to hear how it sounds.

However, that recommendation leads me to believe that a standard Eros II could be a good start for you, and you could always take advantage of their occasional special offers on bespoke cables for existing customers, to upgrade yours to an 8-wire version later.

Anyway, just some ideas for you to consider, along with the other good suggestions already posted :)

on an unrelated note... i think i finally found a case for my Legend X that works for me. it's not a looker, but...

things that matter to me:

  • separate compartments for each IEM. I don't want them banging into each other, especially given that the 2-pin connector is metal.
  • a nice cable wrapping setup. my hands are too big for a 3 or 4 finger wrap to fit in most cases, so i usually have to manually put the wire down, coil by coil
  • relatedly, in something like the "pandora" case, I usually have to put the iems in first—with a little foam cutout I added to keep them from touching—then put the folded up cleaning cloth on top, then coil the wire. the 2.5mm housing is metal, as is the actual connector itself, and even the splitter and slider, so I don't want those getting jammed into the IEMs either.
  • built-in desiccant housing to keep moisture out!
  • seems strong enough
it's a shame it looks so awful compared to both the Aegis and Pandora cases—especially because it's not cheaper than they are—but you do what you gotta do, right?

I would suggest the Eros II 8 wire instead of 4 wire as @Wyville experienced...
Don't know how Eros II pairs with Legend X (can't remember if I tried it), but it is generally a very versatile cable in terms of pairings and I still happily use the 8-wire with my Phantom. Both the 4-wire and 8-wire are great, so it depends on the budget and ergonomics (the 8-wire is quite thick).

That's really nice that they include a dehumidifier, I might have to buy this case.
Here's a link to the case below for anyone else interested.

Oh, I agree totally about the 8-wire, but it seemed like he wasn't looking to spend that much, so I figured the 4 wire was a decent price and would give him enough of an idea about how it affects the sound signature of the Legend X to know whether he wants to 'go big' later

Thanks Lyman1 for a really comprehensive reply. Lots to think about there. Yes, I’ve been over to the Eletech thread and also checked out the website. The Prudence does look good and feels solid and well made. I saw that the first batch of pre orders are about to ship according to Eric.

I have tried the Eros II but that was with the SE846. On those IEMs I thought the Eros II went too high in the treble for me. I also tried the Thor Silver II and the Lionheart, again with the SE846. My preference over all three of these was the Thor Silver II. I think I’ve read on a few reviews that the Thor Silver II+ and the 8 wire paired well with the LX. I can’t afford the 8 wire at the moment but I could get the Thor Silver II+.

There are too many options. But it keeps me busy researching and reading!

I've placed an order for the Prudence, hopefully it comes with the first shipment. Will let you know my thoughts about it vs the Ares II.
