Thanks to both of you.

Ciche question: does it have the clinical sabre ESS tone and thin sound, or is all the 'body' of the music there in full?

And some users mentioned too little bass in dx200, is that a myth?

And does burn in make a notable difference? In what way?

I need to know these things about dx200 before spending so much :moneybag:

Not every device or iems were affected from burn in process but DX200 do especially unbox moment to 150 hr.

It has more body than many ESS devices but it still thinner than some other DAPs.

Little bass ? it depends on taste and personal perception. For me it has enough bass quality and quantity for my taste but it may can't compare to some bassier DAP like OPUS#1.

Unloaded as well as loaded measurements prove that nothing like that is the case - the bass is just as it should be (flat, neutral and without any roll-off). It really is no sorcery anymore to build a DAP/DAC/Amp that measure flat from 20 to 20000 Hz.

+1 to what Chris has said. I think the DX200 presents it as it is....if there's not much bass, have a chat to the mastering engineer of the track.

So far of the 3 players I've spent time with to me the :-

DX200 - neutral dry presentation
AK380Cu - neutral but with a smoother presentation than the DX200
NW-WM1Z - A little warmer/thicker with a fluid analogue-like presentation. Smaller soundstage compared to the above 2.

I've not tried the other Fiio X5G3, Opus 3, new HM901S-type players.

Edit: to my opinion, the DX200's Achilles heel isn't the sound signature - that's just a matter of preference of the listener. It's Achilles heel seems to be the software/firmware which is, thankfully, changeable/upgradeable.

I said befoer, that the path is always something->xmos->es9028->amp. ES9028 inputs are cottected only to XMOS, and accepts data only from XMOS.

ya, i know you did wright that.

i read this sentence..
--> XMOS 32bit USB receiver chip which is best performance asynchronous USB audio solution.

so, XMOS is uesd only through USB memory.
I was misunderstanding.

I have a kinda newbie question for you guys. I bought the DX80 almost a year ago and used it everyday until finding out about the DX200 and upgrading to it.
Both of the units are used 95% of the time in my vehicle. The DSP in my vehicle has an Optical input, so i have always just used a toslink cable directly into the Helix unit.
From reading here my understanding is that the Optical out is bit perfect and theoretically the same audio files should sound identical when played on either DX model via toslink.
Is that the case ?  Because that isn't the way it sounds to me, it's strange. The DX80 has much more midbass and the DX200 has cleaner and prettier highs. I can simply switch the toslink cable from one unit to the other without changing anything else and there is a noticeable difference. What could possibly be happening to make the sound so different on bit perfect playback ?
Thanks for any helpful info.

There are things like jitter that may affect sound even with bit perfect playback. With optical cable, this is the only reason I'm aware of.

You mean conversion cable from micro SD to SD?

Yes. It sounds like so brilliant DAP but the maximum of 320GB is... I want a little bit more strage capacity.
