Neither the DT770/80 or ANY Premium Beyer sound great unamped. The 32ohm and 80ohms do well with a portable amp at least.

As for DT770/80 vs DT990... I wouldn't even put them in the same level. The DT990 is ridiculously superior to the DT770/80 for me.

"Straight out of the box.... well... wow... they destroy my Senn HD-570s in pretty much every respect, even though they aren't even close to being burned in yet. I don't feel that the mid-range is too recessed for my liking. The bass is definitely there, but the vocals are coming through crystal clear... no drowning out at all."

"I'm sure these will just get better as I burn them in. Honestly, I'm glad I didn't go with the 990s... the bass on these for me is perfect, and I can imagine the 990s not being as suited for movie viewing"

It sounds like you just want boomy bass. Get the DT770 Pro 80. End of story.

IMO the weakest part about the dt770 is the involvement of the music. Despite its v shapred curve, its kind of an analytical headphone which makes it better for monitoring than enjoying music. It's kind of like an m50 with a larger soundstage in that respect, which is why I consider it a natural upgrade to that headphone.

However, if you want a good all around closed headphone that doesn't excel in any single way, emphasizes bass and somewhat soundstage, and has one only one main flaw (mids) get the dt770. Its a pretty revealing headphone with low and high quality recordings alike, about at the level of what it costs. Notice how I said it didn't excel in any way. That kind of includes bass. I just don't consider it king of bass <200 status any longer. Maybe it was pre 2007, but in 2011 I've tried the htf600 and d2000 which IMO have notably better bass, the latter all around and the former in subbass. Still a good/great headphone for bass though, and the whole spectrum of bass is pretty good although I feel it is a tad bit muddy in some region (not sure where) and the bass feels like it plummets below 40-50 Hz, as though the bass extends SEMI-deep but then suddenly stops at the deepest end (unlike the d2000s which keep completely strong down to 30 Hz).

And don't listen to those that say the treble is hot on the dt770, to me it is emphasized but smooth and not sharp or peaky, which also makes it easier to fix by EQ.
