LAWTON is in RHODE ISLAND thats where i shipped my phones back in 2011

has anyone compared a martin wooded D2000 to a lawson audio wooded D2000? how do they compare?
 
i'm a basshead who listens to mainly hip hop (as well as EDM, pop music and alternative rock). considering wooden cups from martin, or M-D2000/LA-D2000 lite (perhaps with D5000 or D7000 cable).
 
alternatively, leave the D2000 stock, and get an HE-400 or LCD-2 for something different.

One comment. Mark Lawton told me he had no more cups for a D2000, as they were focusing on D7000's and Fostex headphones. May not be able to get one of his. Martin is glad to work on D2000's.

I forgot that the D2000 has different dimensions than the rest of the line. Is it substantially different dimensions or minor frame prongs/locking mechanism differences? The actual headphones look identical to the naked eye in terms of dimensions and size etc. 
 
Edit: Further research shows that the only difference I can find between the D2000 and others is that it has small plastic pillars on the driver plate to properly space out the driver from the plastic housing. The D5k/7k obviously don't need this because they are made of wood. It seems incredibly easy to remove the small plastic spaces with a crafting knife or to simply sand them down.

Well, my D2000 was Lawton modded and coupled with Alpha pads sounded amazing. Then I had Martin Custom Audio build me a set of COCOBOLO Rosewood cups and the sound is as good but with deeper, throatier bass. Hard to describe but wood cups sound a certain way.

I think it really comes down to the volume inside the cups. Can anyone tell if Martin cups or Lawton cups are different sizes? There's where the difference in sound would lie. I would assume the bass would be deeper with a larger cup volume. People that build subwoofer boxes for cars and entertainment systems 'tune' the box to a certain frequency by adjusting the inner volume, or the depth of a port on a bandpass box. I could only assume that the volume inside headphone cup would affect the bass response the same way.

It's not always directly proportional - the size of the enclosure may create (or eliminate) resonating frequencies at varying sizes.
 
That is a question better suited for the sound-science subforum..  Give it a shot!

yeah, i figure that wood cups is a worthy upgrade, it's more about whether lawton wooden cups or martin wooden cups are a better choice. although perhaps not many people have heard both, given it's a significant outlay either way. i haven't come across any direct head to head impressions from someone who has heard both.
 
you should have got mark to do one of yours, so we could compare! :)
 
maybe i can get one from each! aha. (don't tempt me!)
