Denon AH-MM400

Yep it's happening my friends - about 80 hours (~3 weeks), bass is now laid back, tight and controlled, mids and details are pushed out/much forward, even on not detailed and not bright source, difference is like night and day. It is clear on higher volume levels - out of the box m400 easily lost control, sounded muddy and blurred and now it is well controlled even when I go high with volume, bass has nice impulse response, before it was much too long (decay). Finally cello has proper texture, speed and sharpness/bite that I love.

Hey... care to post a link to this cable? Would it be good for any portable headphones? I really like the Marshall Monitor cable (which I know you have). I would consider getting an extra one of those to use on these or Sennheiser M2, which I'm considering getting.

How do you rate the Denons vs. the Marshalls?
Here you go:

I can assure you the Marshall cable doesn't fit the Denons unfortunately. Not even close. The above one will without any mods.

Monitors vs. AH-MM400s - my 2 beloved headphones. Monitors are the best mobile on-road cans I have owned. They are robust as hell, easily driven, comfy and sound exciting with whatever you throw at them. The Denons however are in a league of their own. Side by side, the AH-MM400s are slightly more comfy given their larger earcups, are made of superior materials, are more transparent and have superior instrument separation. While they allow more critical listening, they never fall into the dull hole that most other audiophile cans fall into. How do I conclude? Marshalls will induce head-bopping while the Denons will give you goosebumps.

I have never heard of Cassandra Wilson prior to now, absolutely awesome. These links are a fantastic way to show what these headphones can do. The tonality of the instruments in each piece is just spot on.

Cool thanks! Am trying to decide between the AH-MM400's and the new Momentum M2.

If I get motivated maybe this weekend I can do the M2 and mm400 comparison....no promises. But you can feel good knowing you bought a great hp regardless the one you choose.

I've been listening to my new Focal Spirit Classic for the last few days, so just flipped through the earlier posts here to check the comparisons to MM400. Their signatures feel quite similar, they're both very capable and versatile. The biggest difference to me using an analogy that while the Denons allow you to chat with somebody while listening to your music in the third row, the FP Classic demands more attention keeping you in the first row. They both change quite a bit with amping, so the source is an important factor when talking about how they sound. MM400 is just perfect with my Cayin C5 but loses its mids with my Fiio E12A. The FP Classic is wonderful with the E12A but loses some dynamics and soundstage with C5. And of course, the (lack of) comfort of FPC is not for everybody. To me the FPC is more 'portable' for outdoor use, and the Denon is 'portable' for carrying it with you between your home and office/cottage.

Peter echos my feelings about the excellent M2.

There is a lot of confusion regarding the fact that
Sennheiser released a wireless as well as a wired version of the M2. I had both at the same time. The wired version is not the same as the wireless even in passive mode. I would say the sound signature of the wireless version, in passive mode, very much resembles the original Momentum, loose bass etc.. But the wired M2 controlled bass, not bleeding into the creamy senn mids. The treble is no where near as rolled off as the original. Thr sound is detailed, and balanced across bass, mid and treble. If there is a bassy track or sub bass it kicks in as it should. The deep earcups and treble create great soundstage.

I love the mm400 as well. It should be an interesting comparison. And you know what, its ok to have more than one love.

Wow, the wired M2 sounds like it fixes everything from the original around-ear, loose bass and a rolled off treble. I returned mine after having had the 3rd fault pair, where the connector that plugs into the ear cup would create static everytime the it turned. That is even considering I treat all my cans with care.

I had the original 2x and returned them both times...I thought they were not very good and I couldn't understand why they were so popular. Don't get get me wrong, there is some of what was good from the originals left in these, but these are tuned differently. They fixed the comfort issues and tuned the sound. I am not a burn-in believer but I am giving the mm400 their due and the sound gets better and better, whether brain burn-in or other.

Well it's £179.97 for the wired M2 Ivory vs £340.20 for the Denon AH-MM400 atm, I don't think it's a fair contest.

If money were no object though; what do you feel the extra £160 gives you in the MM400 over the M2?

Make sure it is the over ear version not the on ear. I haven't heard the M2 on ear so I can not vouch for that, however I think MacHero gave them a very good review in the thread I copied above.

I will say the Denon is not at it's strongest out of the box, I received mine on May 4th, the details are starting to open up. I hate to compare a bang for the buck comparison, because I obviously don't know your financial situation.

How will you use them most? What activities? Out and about? Do you have a portable external amp? What source?

I will try to help just give me a bit more info.
