Is the 7000 really warm sounding?  I just returned my Sennheiser HD598, they were a tad too laid back for me.  They sounded really great on vocals and acoustic but not enough bass on some genres.  I also tried the Ultrasone 580 and returned it yesterday.  I liked the sound although the highs were a little to metallic sounding I could tolerate but not sure for how long.  The mids were also recessed but the bass was there, although loose at times, hit when needed.

I was looking to get the Ultrasone PRO 900 or Denon 7000 next.  I am leaning more towards the 7000 since they are being described as the more balanced phone between the two. Also the top end on the 900 are said to be even more bright than the 580 and borderline sibilant.

What to do?

I had Pro900 for couple of weeks and then I bought D5000, I immediately returned the Ultrasone. It's like night and day. The Denons
are much much better. (used both with e9 and apple lossless from my Ipod).

I do consider the D7k very slightly on the warm side of neutral. They reproduce a very accurate high-end, so in that way they are less 'warm' than the Senn HD-600 / 650.
Their 'fullness' comes from a slight bump in the upper bass, which (to my ears) 'rounds' out the sound and gives it sonority.
The warmth of the D7k is just semantics and a matter of degrees. They ARE slightly warm, but not warm... unless you compare them to something very cool and sterile (K701's anyone?). Even the DT-880/600 Ohm make the D7k seem warm. But taken on their own, they are very naturalistic and acoustic... to my ears.

I 100% agree with you. Despite having a normal inclination towards more neutral headphones, I really really like the D7000. For some reason they go very well with rock too. But paired with a good tube amp, they are great with stringed music.

Got my D7Ks today. Yes, they are way better when D5Ks. The way they build, sound, everything is better. This is the keeper for me for sure. Now awaiting for my Matrix M Stage amp to pair with it. Can't wait. I paid $590 + tax brand new for D7Ks. Oh, and the box looks gorgeous, by the way. Love it.

Agreed, I was really surprised how different they are with more power.

I don't know if its power (because even my iPhone drove my D7000s very well). Likely damping factor methinks as the WA3 is an OTL amp with high output impedance and the D7000s are only 25ohms.

Yes, damping. I never pair the Woo 3 I own and the Denon AH-D7000s. Too soft. They can run off the power of an I-Pod, and they even sound entertaining but they never reach their potential until they are really juiced out.

I've driven the 7000s with iPhone and Android phones before no problem but sonically they sound better through either my dedicated amp/dac or my AV receiver

It's not a huge difference but it's definitely there.  That's the beauty of these headphones is they are easy to drive.  My HD600s...need either the AV receiver or amp/dac or they just don't sound as "full"

I have to disagree with you it's a huge difference imo.

that's your IMO and I'm certainly not in the majority here typically as I spend more time enjoying my music than critiquing it
