Thanks!

I read your HD800 vs T1 thread. That's great review. But you sold the D7000 right? I don't see it in your sig. Among that 4 top of the line you let go the D7000?

I can only really justify owning 3. I found that the 4th really got little head time.

I did sell them, but only to help finance the HD800s which I prefer (and as noted I really only want 3 full sized cans). Skylab (I think) prefers the D7000s...don't worry, you got awesome cans!

For noise isolation, I use one of my IEMs via my uDac (for when the kids are jumping and screaming).

Best would be someone who had them both simultaneously and only for review, not buying either.

I think it is just another case of tone and emotion conveying poorly through the written word. It just sounded like you were less, ah, enthusiastic about the upgrade is all. I probably just misinterpreted.

I wasn't so sure about the upgrade from D5000 to D7000 at first either. I spent a week listening to the D5000's and D7000's back to back, and decided to sell the D5000's, but I was still bit unsure as to whether it was the right move. I heard the D2000's and D5000's again at a meet. That is when I decided the D7000's were clearly better for me, a bit more control on the bottom, a bit less (but still slightly) recessed mids, and less of a positive for me, a bit more forward on top.

In all, I'm quite stoked with them.

Nice to hear that Ford, the less recessed mid alone is worth upgrading for me. And w/ better bass and high too? I don't expect more than that. Soundstage is already so good for closed can and level of details and instruments serparation are top notch for me.

My impressions matches yours. I think all the Denons are great. The D2000 is quite the deal.

I had a chance today to comp the 7000s with J$ pads to the 5000s with markl pads, and I agree the 7000s have a tighter/controlled bottom end, especially in the sub bass area of <35hz. I also agree that the 7000s were less recessed in the mid section compared to the 5000s, but I found the 7000s to have comparable or slightly less high end energy (8k through maybe 11k). I thought the 5000s had more, especially up around 11k/12k on some cymbal crash type material. The bummer is it was a social event and they both had modified pads so I wouldn't chalk my impression up to anything earth shattering.

One last thing, and what sold me on the 7000s; they are silky smooth in texture across the spectrum from what I heard. Very forgiving of bad or troubled recordings.

Having listened to recordings that I was intimately familiar with on a setup I use daily, I favored the 7000s over the HD800s (barely), and both over the HD600s or the D5000s. I will pick up a set later this year.

i needed a "bass" can and so i went with the LA7000's, awesome cans but i thought i wanted something a little more portable so i went with Ultrasone Edition9's and off the LA7000's went. i ended up selling the edition9's before moving to socal and just picked up another one, but i'm thinking i rather have a LA7000 as i never take my cans traveling

I really do think the LA7000 are a step up from my APS v3 cabled Edition 9, being better balanced and more realistic, and less picky about the amp I use. With the Edition 9 I often found myself thinking they sounded too dark if I switched to them after listening to my HD600 or electrostatics.

Even listening to the slightly dark O2 Mk1 and then going to the Edition 9 made the Ed 9 feel dark and closed. But the LA7000 don't strike me as having such a big change in the sound signature when moving from an open headphone, and they sound good all the time.

My opinion is different that the reviewer. I used to own the D5000 with partial markl mods. I bought the D7000 and installed the same mods. I sold the D5000. IMO the D7000 has noticeable better bass (tighter and more control) the mid range is not as recess as the D5000 and the highs are smoother.
The D5000 and D2000 share the same driver. Te D7000 driver is different. In top of all that the D7000 is more efficient too.
The D7000 is my favorite closed cans in top of the Edition 9, DX1000 and W11JPN that I own.

I also sold my Markl MD5000's after getting a stock D7000. That is not saying the MD5000's are bad, they were just simply eclipsed.

And of course the 7000's were mod'd since to further raise the bar. Gotta love those drivers......there's more than one way to skin a........ you get the idea!

I owned D5000 and currently have a D7000 but unfortunately I can't tell anything about the differences between them because of amp. My old D5000 was powered by a Woo 6 while my D7000 is powered by a cheap 5.1 Denon receiver.

That makes listening on D5000 was muuuch mooore enjoyable than listening on D7000
frown.gif
That's what I know for sure

Anyhow I want to try something new, something that do not have recessed mid (especially when unamped like a D7000) and less bass.

That said, I'm waiting for a STAX-2050A system
biggrin.gif
Maybe I will miss the D7000 and will get it back plus a proper amp one day. I hate letting it go

Then you should try my pair of Modded Denons. They don't have recessed mids for sure...

The drivers don't have recessed mids at all. It's the strictly closed environment that traps standing bass waves, which results in bloat. It also sucks out the mids and cuts off the high frequencies.

This closed situation also greatly compresses the soundstage.
