I am looking for an upgrade to my A2 Noire on the closed back side.
I have auditioned E3 vs Atrium Closed recently. In my opinion both are excellent. My problem is that on the open back side I have HFM HE1000SE – one of the best headphones on the market. Their biggest flow is that in comparison, most other headphones sound “vailed”. The resolution, sound stage projection and holography are simply outstanding on HEKSE. If you like precision, more analytical detailed sound, IMO E3 is a slightly closer to HEKSE and possibly a better choice. However, the more I listened to Atrium the more I liked it. There is something seductive in their sound that pulls me in. I will probably go with Atrium.
I recently got HEKSE and was always wondering what if I could have gotten E3. So I wanted to know people's opinion who have heard both of them. I tried Atrium Closed for a while but I realized they were too laid back for me and sounded not wide enough for my taste. I tried heavy EQ on HEKSE specially on treble region and added a bass shelf that really helped them. I wanted to get Utopia but as per the review they have intimate soundstage and was really putting me off. I'm also curious about Abyss Joal but not much info about them so far.
I have a pair of DCA's Ether2, which is a great planar headphone. I'm wondering if the E3 can also be driven by a portable DAP like the Ether2. Most of the time, I use the ONIX Mystic XP2, a portable DAC/AMP combo.

I use the FIIO KA17. Runs it fantastic, at less less than half volume. It's a *very* small portable little USB device, but is *not* battery powered. Works best connected to a laptop with plenty USB power. On a phone it struggles due to lack of USB power, and I have to turn the volume all the way to max. Still sounds good, but it's obvious it's pushing the amp to the limit.

This is really surprising! Is the JM21’s output that powerful? In that case, if the E3 must be used with a portable DAP, it seems like it might actually be feasible.

Fosi DS2 or Tanchim Luna will drive an E3. I’ve got a Fosi D2, ifi xdsd Gryphon, and FiiO Q15. Amir at Audio Science review showed the Luna s the second most powerful dongle and the DS2 was around 4th most powerful. My gryphon clips with the E3 on bass heavy tracks, but the DS2 and Q15 work on all tracks.
How much E3 leaks sound to outside vs. Noire X? I mean Noire X does not leak at all, can you listen E3 when there's others around?
Is E3 harder to drive than Noire X?

E3 is about the same with regards to noise leakage as the Aeon/Noire series, which is very good and no issues listening with others around. E3 is harder to drive. For example, on Mojo2, it takes four extra clicks (+4dB to get to double orange, which is 0.12v) to achieve the same level.

I found the E3 to leak considerably more than the NX. When I covered the top vent holes on the E3, it leaked much less so that's the majority of the leakage. For my preferred listening levels, E3 would definitely bother my coworkers.
