Unless of course the DAC section of the unit is better than Solo’s, making it a better pairing with an external amp than the Solo. My apologies for continuously editing my post.

Just one more quick question, is this product still relevant today or are there better portable DACs for iDevices? Looking at getting the -R since I don’t need balanced or an external DAC.
I would be using IEMs and would appreciate no hiss/noise whatsoever, in case I get DAC/amp recommendions with high output.

The CLAS, last checked still works fine with the iPhone 7 (but I'm on 10.1.1, not tried iOS 11 yet). Mine is the -dB and it's coupled with the Duet. There is a slight hiss however personally it's not bothered me and I generally have a high tolerance to hiss.

The DAC itself these days is probably considered as somewhat outdated not having the supporting circuitry to support DSD native (the DAC chip itself does, but the design of the CLAS doesn't seem to support DSD native - one would need the app - Onkyo HF Player to convert DSD -> PCM in the phone before sending out PCM to the CLAS).

Having said that, its still useful that it charges the iPhone -fully- whilst playing. So it acts as both a DAC and a powerbank.

I don’t mind the lack of DSD, and I’d probably use a less powerful amp with it since it would be primarily for IEMs. Thinking of getting an RSA P-51 Mustang for it.. don’t remember any hiss when I owned it before, although stacking with the solo might be a pain. If it can charge the iPod and still get upward of say 10 hours I’m sold. I’ll just wait until one pops up in the classifieds.

Has anyone tried the HD 650 with the RX MK II and Original Solo? If so how was the sound?

Does the solo -db have dual DACs, as it's a balanced DAC?

No. Single AKM AK4396 DAC chip.
24/192

But has a ‘balanced’ headphone output via a Koniconn connector.

Don't know about the iPod Nano 3rd Gen, but the iPhone 12 Pro Max works with the Solo -dB

P.S. don't criticise my choice of music .
