Cowon X7 this summer!
Oct 2, 2010 at 7:17 PM Post #76 of 380
As you all can imagine... I cannot wait for the X7, I am really excited. I even bought some new headphones (ath-es10), just for the upcoming X7.

I also love head-fi, so every information I find, I love to share with you
biggrin.gif

The first link leads to some leaked news about a new update software for the X7. It seems to be very different to the usual one, that is on the Cowon players itself. Maybe someone who understands better Korean could explain this Link: http://translate.google.at/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fhyogoon.tistory.com%2F229%3F_new_tistory%3Dnew_title&sl=ko&tl=en&hl=&ie=UTF-8

The next link states that there will be two versions: http://translate.google.at/translate?hl=de&sl=ko&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Ftople.net%2Fview%2F95908
D3 will be Android-ed.

Here a very plakative pic:

Orly? Look at what is offered on http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=636&name=SSD

The size (as in capacity) of an individual NAND-flash chip has to be a power of two, but SSDs use more than one chip per drive, so you may end up with a capacity not a power of two. 80GB, for example, might be 10*8GB. Adding 5 more chips would give you the 120GB version. I would point out, though, that most (or all? I can't say for sure off the top of my head) manufacturers simply double the number of chips when offering a higher capacity. Based on that, if those two options (80 + 120) turn out to be correct, my money would be on it being HDDs. On the other hand, as someone has already pointed out, 1.8" 80GB HDDs are probably hard to come by.

Oooh I am excited. Could do with replacing my semi-broken Classic.

Seems like that it is or will be released this month. Also as far as google translates, there will be a 160gb version. Sadly I cannot say if there is Android as os, because the translation is too confusing....

Nice find!  This is the first time I have seen the Android OS mentioned in print.

It was mentioned often in blog entries, but never officially. Only thing that is pretty official is that the D3 will be on Android: http://droidninja.com/2010/10/03/cowon-d3-to-come-with-android-bring-lossless-playback-with-it/

Maybe they develop Android for both devices. This would make sense, since it is cheaper than developing an extra OS.

EDIT: When thinking about it again, the X7 just has Bluetooth and no WIFI. Android would not make sense without internet connectivity.

For anybody who needs translation(http://news.etomato.com/news/etomato_news_read.asp?no=114442):

PMP전문업체 코원이 120GB와 160GB 대용량 HDD형 MP3플레이어를 출시한다.

Cowon, a company specializing in making PMPs is going to release a high capacity(120GB/160GB) HDD MP3 player.

Cowon said in 4th, that they will release a high capacity HDD-based MP3 Player targeted at middle school and high school students around 중순(meaning the middle ten days of the month, but I can't find the word) this month.

Currently the HDD MP3 player market is dominated by iPod Classic.

The Cowon's HDD MP3 player is after 5 years from the 2005's X5, and it is expected to compete with iPod classic in the HDD MP3 market.

Apart from the older model, the screen of this player is touch capable, and though the exact price is not decided, it will not be a flagship.it will be a relatively cheaper model.

The iPod Classic currently has only 160GB model, and it is sold at 379,000won(you know the price in $), and the Cowon's price is expected to be lower.

이인석(pronounced Lee In-Suk), the public relations manager said "X7 is high capacity, and is specialized for study purposes. We have partnership with all on-line study sites from like Megastudy, so you will be satisfied with the high quality contents and cheap prices". (I don't think you have to worry about what he said, it's only about the Korean market)

Btw, the flagship MP3 with the Android 2.2 is expected for release at about the start of November, at the latest.

My English is not that good, but I think this is better than Google translation. Hope this clarifies a bit!

Edit: fixed some errors.

yooss,

Thank you as well.  From the sound of it, I don't think the X7 will be an Android device, unless THIS is the flagship device that's mentioned in the last sentence.

The flagship is the D3, not X7. Well, the D2 was a major hit for Cowon and everybody waited for the release of a next generation of the D2, and here it comes. Will it be a hit? I don't know. Will it be good? For me and others who liked the Cowon players I think yes, since Cowon themselves named it D3, meaning that it will strongly have their color and their unique taste that is comparable to D2. I loved it until I broke the screen and it took quite a lot of money to repair it, so I bought the S9, since I liked the "Cowon taste" I felt with the D2. But I don't think I would be buying either X7 or the D3 soon... I bought the Hifiman player and I guess I have to stick to it at least for a year or two.

And I'm waiting for the player to ship for over a month and I am using the dreaded nano 2nd gen.

Thanks.  I remember hearing about the D3, but I completely forgot about it.

I can't imagine Cowon making a throwaway. The D2, while not my favourite, is a good player. So too is the S9 and J3. They always add SFX up the wazoo for 'audiophiles' and trick their advertising with the easiest of keywords: battery life, SQ, etc. Cowon won't be undone by a player as long as they advertise the way they have been doing for years.
