If we're answering the OP's question as it was asked, I don't think there is any question at all that the answer is the DT880/600.  Are they exactly like the T1?  No.  Are they the closest headphone to the T1 for $300?  Beyond a shadow of a doubt, IMO.  They're also great headphones, and a bargain for $300.

Just one more thing, out of personal curiosity:  how's the soundstage and imaging of the DT880?  Especially as compared to other cans that are usually considered good in that category, like the HD800, T1, and K701?

Not as good as HD800 or T1, but still excellent, IMO.

Yeah, that's what he's getting.  I managed to talk him into getting an amp as well
