Are you still using Windows 2000? It doesn’t matter if you buy (and rebuy) or rent. It’s all about continued improvement and features as hardware, etc. changes. You end up getting/paying the same in the long run.

It's not the same at all and it's not even about how much you pay. It's just that some of us reject the idea of paying software subscriptions.

OK. We’re getting off topic, but I don’t see the real difference between buying Roon2020, Roon2021, Roon2022, etc. for $129 each year and paying for those updates continuously without the pain of upgrading in a discontinuous way, except that the subscription is a potentially better experience.

Edit: Also, my thinking has evolved on this, too, as until a few years ago, I would have been of the same mindset.

Well you're right in the sense you can buy one year's worth. But I think the point is it stops working after a year, doesn't it? Or do just the upgrades stop? Maybe I misunderstood.

If roon just stops running at the end of the year then no, it's not like Windows. If it's just a matter of not getting updates then I would have to agree with you.

Don't get me wrong, this is not the main reason I hate roon :D This was just another reason for me to hate it...

I don’t like Roon because I boycott the “rental business model” that is emerging today in general.

What is your opinion about the sound quality of Audirvana versus Roon?
I have Audirvana and after picking up the Mojopoly tried the 2-week Roon trial (before having to pay). Audirvana works with Mojo (via USB) whereas Roon works with Mojo via USB or Mojopoly via network connection. Roon also has built-in DSP like cross-feed and the Audeze presets, whereas you need to use third party DSP plug-ins with Audirvana.

Audirvana and Roon did sound bit different to my ears - even when comparing both via USB to Mojo only. When I was comparing them sometimes I felt that Audirvana was subjectively better, sometimes Roon. But I already own Audirvana and it was a once-off cost of 75 USD or something, versus the yearly subscription model for Roon - which is more expensive for only one year use than Audirvana is for perpetual use. There are firmware updates for Audirvana too, which are included in that cost.

So in the end I uninstalled Roon before the trial ended. In all honesty I don't really understand why it's gotten so big in the audiophile community. I mean it's a perfectly fine piece of software, but it's very expensive when that cost is just to play music in your own collection, with Qobuz or Tidal etc. subscriptions on top of that (if you were going to go the streaming route). I'm also not a fan of subscription software either.

I'm not fully decided yet, but I'm thinking I may sell the Poly and just use Mojo via USB with Audirvana - it's just so much easier than using Poly via an app on my phone. I experimented with using m3u playlists and controlling playback just with GoFigure, but now that I've added a whole bunch of albums as playlists to the microSD card, it takes ages for GoFigure to load up the "Music" screen, so that's become a bit of a dead end. Although microSD card playback on the Poly does seem to extract more details than Mojo alone, I also find myself feeling that I prefer Mojo alone for longer listening - somehow Poly adds more detail but misses something else, like it's a bit drier or more sterile.

Maybe I'm also influenced by the fact that it's currently summer in Shanghai (where I am) and man it's hot. I can't imagine using Mojopoly on the go, in a case - which traps more heat - in this weather, which limits it's portable use to winter-only. Throw in to the mix that I also now have my Fiio M11 Pro which sounds great and is easy to use either for portable or stationary listening and the Poly just feels like a bit of a hassle (long story, but the M11Pro was in another country and I didn't think I'd see it until the end of year with coronavirus travel difficulties, hence took a dive with Mojopoly).

If you try the Mojo optical vs USB, then optical is the reference source. That's the best to hear it. If USB seems more transparent that you might have noise coming from your source. Then you would need Jitterbug.

Audirvana also works with the Poly btw.

I am on Mac OS X which gets supported a lifetime for free, same with iOS which gets improved and new features added for free.

Other software like Logic Pro X cost me only $200 and I receive continued improvements and features for free also. And this is software that is much more advanced than a music player like Roon which can cost well over $1000+ over the long run based on a subscription model.

Only subscription based services like Tidal, Netflix, and so on ... makes sense.

Well bugger me, it does too. I never noticed that little option tucked away at the bottom of the Audirvana output selection. Thanks, I'm listening to it now :)

I've been using Macs for over 30 years, professionally for over 25 years. Yes, I'm a Mac fan boy, bigly! That said, the software is not exactly free. They charge a premium for their hardware (which I don't mind paying). The hardware profit margin funds the software dev.

I also dislike the subscription-based model. I work as a photo retoucher. For years, I avoided upgrading Photoshop for that reason. Finally, I had no choice but to subscribe in order to keep working.

Love Roon, but I opted for the lifetime version rather than subscription. I got lucky because I purchased it a few months before the price jump. BTW, LogicPro (which I use) is not the same as Roon. Very different beasts.

I keep getting this happening on GoFigure, with no network names showing, makes it pretty hard to choose the right network!

Anyone else have this problem?

I owned the Mojo and Poly on two occasions- found the pair to be great for use with Roon at home but finicky/unstable on the go (whether for SD card playback or any other type of playback); I now own a Hugo 2+2Go that I have been extremely happy with.

I am getting my MMR Thummim tomorrow and might be looking to replace my existing DAP (Cayin N6ii+E02)
What is the current state of affairs in Mojo/Poly world? It seems as if people seem generally happy with their performance now?

Thanks in advance,
Nick

What's good - MPD general performance playing from internal SD card (I mostly use it like this) - though MPD should be updated really to resolve minor issues.
What's annoying - still no Casting / Spotify support.
