Cayin RU7: 1-Bit Resistor Network Dongle DAC /Amp

Is the issue with Android or a PC or Mac? I assume not IOS the way the discussion has unfolded.

Never heard of any firmware updates for this unit. But reaching out to goldfox is a good idea.

This is one of my more reliable components and great sounding so I hope you get it fixed.

It's RU7 related, and goldfox wasn't able to provide a quick solution.

This should be super easy as other companies also use the comtrue chip, there is a tool and a known way to flash firmware on the device, all I need from Cayin is to provide a VID/PID of the device and a firmware file.

The device itself is turning on and I can even see the interface, all needed is a firmware file, other dongles get this to happen if firmware flashing is stopped or did not go thru well, but it is definitely recoverable.

Exactly, but well...

Anyone got an issue with the RU7 being detected as "Comtrue-inc Firmware upgrade device" ? The RU7 is barely used
@Gold Fox

I had the same issue when my unit arrived.
After contacting their support, they refused to send the firmware/instructions and advised to send it to China at my own expense for repair.

Which I did, now it arrived and it works.

Whole story took several months.

It's a bit overkill to do all this for a simple fix, I wouldn't have the patience.

If the unit was new when purchased, why not simply return it to the place of purchase for replacement or refund? My unit has been trouble free but I do not have much patience for stuff like this.

I bought it from their official store at Aliexpress.
So sending to China either way, but I really wanted to get it fixed.

Now that I have it, can't say I'm extremely satisfied..
On one hand - great sound and can drive some serious headphones.
On another - weird clicking too often and sometimes the left channel goes quieter than the right.
Mixed bag.

With the iphone, I have no clicking issues. The few times I tried them on my PC everything seemed fine. Must be an Android issue in particular. With the iphone, the volume on the phone itself is not part of the equation, that information is bypassed.

Just switched over from the Holo May KTE*|Hagerman TUBA combination [with a host of tweaks inserted fore, aft, above, below, 'twixt and 'tween] to the RU7, the Cayin preceded by the AQ Jitterbug, iFi iSilencer+, ddHiFi TCO9S USB-C-to-USB-C cable, ddHiFi TCO1A USB-C-to-USB-A adapter.

While not as vast, micro-detailed, incisive and immersive as the May/TUBA, the RU7 more than holds its own with a rich tonality, unfaltering pace, non-fatiguing liquidity and engaging musicality.

After about a half hour with the RU7 and ATH-A900X, I'm in hurry to return to the "heavy equipment". This little dongle is a stone-cold bargain!

:slight_smile:

[(*) The May is in its beginning stages of break-in.]

@Gold Fox
Our aftersales team has just replied to your email, please check your inbox when you get a moment.

Unfortunately, the RU7 cannot be flashed by user. Firmware flashing requires the unit to be disassembled, a specific circuit to be shorted, and then flashed via our internal software tool.

And we appreciate for the feedback, this is something we should consider adding for future dongle designs. For now, I want to apologize to all RU7 users who’ve encountered this issue. But please rest assured, if this happens, we’ll definitely getting it repaired.

been dreaming of a semi portable device from Cayin, that uses the 1bit dac and ads a small tube amp. usb and spdif in, similar po/lo design to ru7. volume knob instead of buttons. focus on soundstage depth, layering and neutral tonality with a hint of warmth. easily replaceable battery, 350g, 599EUR.

Goldfox had an interesting post on the RU9 thread explaining why the RU9 tube dongle doesn't have the 1 bit DAC. Worth reading.

My RU7 is not outputting sound to either the 3.5 or 4.4mm jack. I have reason to believe it is the output circuits as my phone software recognizes the RU7 and the RU7 shows corresponding correct bit rates to the media played. Already tried multiple IEMs, USB cables, etc. and the problem is the RU7. My backup DAC is working okay.

Is there any method to resetting the unit or is it likely going back to my dealer or directly to Cayin?
