Cayin N7: A Voyager of Unexplored Frontier

Updated impressions after around 65 hours of burn in. I’m very impressed with the N7 and quality of the musical experience it delivers. All below with Mest 2.

Voices - in class A, created an emotional connection. You can hear every nuance in the voice from the warmth and power of the chest, to firmness of the throat, to the softness of the lips. It’s the details like the quiver and cracks in the voice that got me and created chills.

Classical instruments - still class A, I can hear the sound resonance in the instrument cavities such as violin, woodwind and horns. Violins have texture and I can almost pick up bow switching from string to string. Horns are solid and cymbals crash. Bass can be localized but then spreads to fill the stage. Layering is musical and engaging.

Rock - class A is a wall of sound. Great lateral width and lead guitars are solid and crunchy - they project force. Drums have attack and cymbals are splashing with nice decay. The only flaw I could detect is the drums are too forward in the stage and while they sound amazing, it is too flat of a soundstage.

I switched to AB and the drums were further back in the stage and sound more correct, however the power and aggression was not as strong. Less exciting but more analytically satisfying. Still very good sound and dynamics in AB, interesting that it deepened the perceived soundstage. On a whim I switched to high gain and it restored a lot of what was missing for rock while keeping the dimensions of the soundstage. So that was an exciting find.

I think I prefer class A because of the higher engagement it creates with voices and classical, I think it’s the improved palpability and presence which connects emotionally. That magic may come at the expense of the perception of depth. For rock the formula is high gain AB, which creates exciting slam and a huge stage.

I’ll do some more experimenting later on but the overall experience is incredible and has exceeded my expectations when I purchased the N7.

I have got N7 recently, could you please tell which i2s cable can be used with it as it seems to have small size of i2s. Also, is it possible to get an i2s cable which can be used as N7 as source to input in a DAC which has different size of i2s port. Not sure if an i2s cable available which has different size of i2s termination.

"Ordinary" Mini HDMI - HDMI cable, like this

Works perfectly from N7 to Rockna Wavelight 😃

It's quite satisfying how the GSX and MHA200 line up on top of the Wavelight

Can you convert to DSD512 via N7 and then Transfer to the Wavelight?
(As in use the N7 DDC but not the DAC)
It allows for a fairly space saving arrangement indeed. It is even more satisfying how much better the Wavelight sounds using the i2s input.

I have not tried to figure out the HW DSD conversion yet.
Looking at the schema from Andy I suppose the API for the players are using the DSD or PCM what goes between MCU and FPGA to put out on the Mini HDMI i2s.

If the internal DAC us to be used then the PCM is looped through the Audio Bridge.
I do not think that the possibility is given to external players to make the loop through the Audio Bridge to play on the i2s interface. I may be wrong, @Andykong could chime in.

I am always using either UAPP or the Qbuz app. I have not found the conversion possibility in any of them yet.
I have not looked the Cayin/HiBy player yet. Would be interesting.

Sounds like an interesting experiment. Could you provide more details of what he did? In particular, what output of the N7 he ran into his system, and what the receiving stage was (pre-amplifier?).

I‘m asking this since - as a ballpark rule - the sound characteristics of a DAP are imprinted more by its amplifier stage, and less by its DAC stage. Thus, when you take the DAP true line out, its amp is bypassed, leaving the DAC and only its characteristics in the game. That ballpark rule holds for standard DAPs/DACs with off-the-shelf converter chips - I wouldn‘t know whether it also holds for devices like the N7.

Your comments are highly welcome.
If I'm not mistaken, he used lo, I'll ask him soon and update.

You can find some reflections on amp pairing here - https://audiorabbithole.com/cayin-n7-review/

I hope it will be useful and I hope my comments are fair.

This is a very fine DAP, but I feel it reaches its real potential when paired with an external amp (portable or desktop). I would also say, I think the merits of the N7 are its smooth presentation and analog like musicality. For me personally, I lean toward a more forward/neutral/linear presentation that focuses especially on technical aspects. Please have that in mind if anyone is interested in the review.

Thank you.

Do you charge in parallel while using the I2s ?
I use the I2s with my Spring 3 KTE. Works perfectly and the Hiby control is a nice feature as well.
Usually no need, battery holds good. Connecting two cables are more complicated then just one when changing from stationary to mobile use and back.
But it works with both, tried once. No additional noise when using Hiby docking station for charging.

What do you mean by Hiby control? The HibyCast?

Thank you for an informative review.
It’s answered some questions I had .
