Cayin N6ii, Unlimited Possibilities: a fully modularized smart DAP

The Audio Motherboards are slightly different from upgrade modules of other DAP. We consider each and every Audio Motherboards as equivalent but different: equivalent in quality level but for different needs and preference. For this reason, Cayin N6ii don't have a default Audio Motherboard, you can purchase N6ii with A01, T01, E01 or E02 directly, and we call his bundled version. We don't have bundled version for A02 because we only make 1 batch of 500 units. We don't have a bundled version for R01 either because we have 600 units of N6ii-Ti which is equivalent to bundled version already, and in our past experience, 600 units is about right for bundled version. We didn't expect a 2 years old DAP can sell like a hot cake and all 600 units of N6ii-Ti were sold out very soon. That make the late new-comers a bit difficult as they can't select bundle version for R01, they can only select a bundle version from A01, T01, E01 or E02 and then buy a R01 Audio Motherboard "separately".

We don't have any plan to develop new Audio Motherboard for N6ii.

Besides when we go from E01 to E02, we need to change from ES9038Pro to dual ES9038Q2M instead (save up 50% of PCB space), give up Class A and the related Bias Control circuit. We can't save a lot of space by giving up the 3.5mm phone out of R01 because the DAC and amplification circuit remain unchanged.
Oh well just a thought. I guess it might be an option when the N6ii is replaced one day...

It sorta depends on which module you're running. Generally speaking I prefer sharp roll-off filters for my AKM DACs. I should probably give the E02's setting a spin. I literally have no idea what they're set at, and I'm not very familiar with Sabre chips.

After living with the R01 for a few weeks now, I gotta admit, I think the E02 is still my favorite with the Empyrean. No doubt I prefer the R-2R DAC, but I wouldn't be shocked to learn that the E02's amp stage is the most powerful of all the N6ii modules. Maybe the ideal headphone for the R01 is either something less current-dependent or a high quality IEM (stares nervously at the FD7).
I have to agree that R01 power isn’t that versatile. Good for IEM and lower impedance headphones. Higher ones like Senns hd650 the bass is anaemic. Tried with IFI Diablo via USB strangely the volume control on N62ii affects the loudness. Was expecting using usb would render the N6ii as a transport. Anyone can shed some light here? Thanks.

If you look at the power rating of 4.4mm phone out at 32ohms, the A01 and T01 offers 530mW, E02 offers 600mW, and R01 offers 430mW, so the E02 is indeed more powerful than R01. In addition, the E02 Audio Motherboard is equipped with fully discrete headphone amplification circuit, it is also stronger then the parallel Op-Amp circuit of R01 in terms of current capacity.

Hi Fellas, if I wanted to try using the R01 with an external amp (in bi-amp configuration), what is the ideal volume that I should set the N6ii to?
It depends on the gain ratio of your amplifier and the R01 will increase heat noise if you push the volume too high. I suggest you start with 70 at R01 and compare different combinations.

Why is my tidal sampling size different when plugging in and without plugging in? @ Andy Kong. Please advice. Thank you.

When you connect a headphone or IEM to N6ii, the DAP will support 8x unfold on MQA material, upto 384kHz max. (or 4x for T01, upto 192kHz).

When you disconnect your phone output, the DAP will fall back to digital output mode in order to reduce battery consumption. Without the DAC in place, N6ii can only support 2x unfold (upto 96kHz)

Which means that E02 has the most power hunger among all?

For those who are suffering from iOS limitations and the quality of the HibyLink for apple devices.

1. Manipulate with music on a player which is in a bag or an inside pocket - 7$ remote controller from aliexpress with led light 💡. It's a super tiny thing that works without any delays.
2. To have the opportunity to stream from iPhone I use Upnp/DLNA server program AirPin on the player. To use AirPlay, the player must be in the same wi-fi network as an Apple device, so you have to connect the player to the iPhone hotspot or to the router( they could be portable btw). Then you just stream from Tidal or AM to the player via AirPlay using wi-fi and not AAC. For sure it's not so comfy as using LDAC to stream from any android device and use HibyLink, which is good on Android, to play from SD. But for me, carrying 2 smartphones and the player is already too much as music listening converting to the carrying plenty of devices, their charging and so on..

I downloaded Amazon HD & Apple Music on to my N6ii and it works brilliantly. No issues. Totally impressed with the sound from my RO1. This player just keeps on getting better and better.
Havent tried Apple music on it yet , since i mostly use tidal will give it a shot haha since the battery life is about 11hours 15mins (Med gain and 45 vol on shozy pola) for me haha !!! need to try this with streaming

(Med gain and 45 vol on shozy pola)
WOW THAT'S GOT TO BE LOUD!!!

I'm Med Gain 40 vol on Beyerdynamic T5p Gen 2 as I type this listening to JMJ Live in Notre-Dame VR and that's as loud as I need to go.

R01 streaming Qobuz and it sounds just incredible to me, the pinnacle of searching for this kind of sound at my budget. :)

Shozy Pola - 101db 12 ohms
Beyer T5p2 - 102db 32 ohms

Interesting they have quite similar efficiency specs.

haha yeah 🤣🤣 but I tend to not put them in ear haha 😋 while going for battery test !!!
I listen to POLA on high gain around 20-30 vol, and it doesn't get that loud haha!!! EST though loves high current , so high gain and med gain has some difference to the dynamics for sure !!!
Planars, I think T5p2 is , should love high gain and less volume since my sundara loved high gain and less volume than med gain and high volume. My focal clear has the same story going on for it
But Grace nah it doesn't want that high power, lower gain and higher volume is much more its playground

Sorry, but is there a manual on how to access the mainboard of the device? The touch screen doesn't work and after several resets I believe it's the ribbon cable loose or something. It's a real bummer, I'm stuck at the language select screen now. I suppose you will need something like the cpb heating pad to remove the glass bottom? Hope it's a simple fix.
