Thanks for your unbiased opinion, much appreciated, but now you have me changing my mind in going for the XDP-100R instead.

Note that the XDP-300R is basically last years DP-X1, so with a dual ES9018K2M and balanced out.

To put this in perspective:
DP-X1 price is still around GBP 699.-
XDP-300R SRP is GBP 599,-
XDP-100R (single ES9018K2M) is now available for GBP 399,-, same as i5.
So comparing the i5 to the DP-X1/XDP-300R is not fair, comparing the i5 to the XDP-100R (based on current pricetag) is.

Joking aside: if you don't dsp your music (I don't EQ my music at all) don't need apps you normally would install on your mobile phone and just need for a very capable music player your choice would be i5, right?

The other thing is that Cayin will probably be supporting the i5 after pioneer/onkyo have stopped the 100r.

Well good news is i will be able to compare the i5 and the xdp-100r on the tour. I love my 100r and look forward to the competition. Depending when i get the i5 i might also have a fiio x7 or xdp-300r to compare as well. Just depends on what happens on the first.

if i have a dap with a flagship dac then do i need an external dac?

I don't see why, if you do that you are just using the DAP as a transport, there are cheaper options for that like a mobile phone supporting USB OTG and USB Audio Player Pro and a DAC of your liking.
The reason I am looking into a DAP with good DAC is that I am tiered of dragging around my LG-G3 with iFi Nano DAC.

I don't think I can wait that long making my decision.... :frowning2:

That is what I was thinking/expecting/hoping as well...

No, BUT a lot of your enjoyment will depend on synergy between player and headphones. Example I5 with ATH-M50, to my ears requires FiiO Mont Blanc to trully enjoy bass, since without it is either not enough, or if I try to dial more bass it will distort. However, with Beyer Custom Street it is just plain gorgeous without any amp. Personal preference does play  a huge roll. So. in the nutshell, you would have to experiment a lot, like most of us here in order to find that "ultimate" sound that suits you.

Is there a Class A amplifier running in this PMP?

A 4800 mAh battery is MASSIVE, but having 11 hours of playback for a 4" 800x480 display seems a bit odd. For comparison, the Acoustic Research AR-M2 has a Class A amplifier, 5" HD display, and has a 4200 mAh battery that lasts 8.5 hours.

Does anyone know if you can get audio output currently on the i5 via USB?  I've got a ALO Audio Continental Dual Mono incoming and would like to use this as mainly just a transport, and occasionally as an all in one DAP when I don't feel like bringing the CDM.

i5 only does usb out to spdif but the Alo CDM has no coaxial input.
USB to USB does not work now with current firmware.
