They cost twice as much, but if we're talking about sound, and we're trying to be fair, they do sound better. Whether the improvement is worth twice the price is anybody's guess but these cans also have a noise-cancelling feature that works relatively well. Of course, for that, I'd just use in-ear monitors with better clarity, tighter bass and better isolation with little need for fancy parlor tricks. In a fight with most decent IEMs (the UM3X, the SE530, the Westone 3 or even the diminutive Phonak Audeo PFEs) Bose would get its tail kicked and its lunch money lost.

I still think the biggest problem with Bose is not the headphones themselves, which are cheap and second-rate, but with the sheeplike ignorance of the public and the poseur pretensions of the Bose marketing machine. The MSRP for Bose's on-ear headphones is $179. To headphone noobs who are used to paying $30 for a pair of plastic headphones, that's a lot of money. To headfiers, it's a drop in the bucket. For less than $200 brand new, you're not getting hi-fi. You're not even getting mid-fi. You're getting an overlap between the high end of low-fi and the low end of mid-fi. Bose's real "research" is not in top-quality sound but in what the public will spend on a set of plastic headphones. The design of their cans is a series of obvious mistakes - from the cheap wiring to the leatherette cushions to the cheap plastic shells. Even their drivers suck.

Bose doesn't even try to make a headphone that could stand toe to toe with the heavyweights. If it wanted to, Bose could come out with a high-end headphone - a kind of concept car - to command respect from its detractors. It could put out a headphone that would rival the best from AKG, Sennheiser, Sony, Grado, Beyerdynamic, etc. Such a headphone could also demand a premium supra-thousand-dollar price, regardless of whether anybody bought it. The purpose of making such a phone would not be to clean up (Bose already does that). It would be to show everybody that Bose can make a great phone. But Bose won't do that. I suspect it's because Bose knows what people think of it within the circle of serious headphone users. I suspect it also knows that making a better phone might interfere with the pretensions of its mass-produced, market-driven junk. Bose would rather pretend that its crap is "better sound through research" than make a better headphone, which it could do by simply copying the obvious (routine) improvements of so many better phones.

the Sony v700djs are annoying because they actually are good DJ phones, complete with modified spectrum for queuing, but they fall apart so easily. Only the swivel joint(s) break so easily, which has lead me to create franken700s. The much more durable, but crappier sounding v600, that well, I guess is sold because some people think they are getting a v6, or similar, anyway, the actual cups fit on the headband of the v600s. It looks weird, but you can easily fold them over and fold them up, without all the cracking. The v600 headband and driver forks have long outlasted a single v700dj set of swivel joints.

Sony tried too hard to make them look cool, even though they do not, and Pioneer has a set that is probably better, looks very similar to the v700s, and is probably built better, and may even share the same driver. I don't know though. I like the pads on the v700s because they are not meant to cover the ear, but to rest on top, which makes holding a cup up to your ear very easy when you have to flip them. The v6s and the 7506s have ear pads that one must shove their ear into, although, they are great cans. The interesting thing is in a few years, the v700s pads will be fine, and the joints will be trashed, but the v6 and 7506s will have already flaked off all over everything. Whatever that crap is over the foam, it doesn't age well. You can buy new pads for cheap, but you have to buy a new set of v700s, so in the end, they may be great for actual DJ work, but not worth them breaking all the time. I had superglued and zip tied, and did just about everything until mine could no longer be used, except the drivers and pads, being fine, needed a new home.

hi

i have had a bose qc 2 for a quite some time and i have to say there are pretty good if you  are looking for tight deep bass and clarity. most of the ppl in this forum prefer IEM over noise canceling but as person who doesn't like IEM i loved the bose qc 2. true they can be bit over price but i don't think any one will be disappointed
with them. also i should tell you that when u get used to the slight pressure on your ears due to noise canceling you ll be able to enjoy them without any discomfort. i have also used the bose IEM and i didnt like them that much i believe for that price you could get a pair of better headphones or IEMs. in conclusion if u travel alot and prefer good sounding noise canceling headphone go for the bose qc 2 or better qc 15. i think currently the best noise canceling head phone is the qc 15 but i ve to say that for the fraction of its price you could get the Sennheiser px300 which is also darn good

Hehe...welcome to Head-fi young Padawan...you have much to learn.

FYI...I did own the QC'2s and the NC was kind of neat, but they sounded really muddy and sloppy (in other words, I was VERY disappointed). They were a total rip at $300+. For the money, try a set of K701s, DT880/600, DT700/600, HD600s...you will be amazed.

Remember Bose = Buy Other Sound Equipment

Welcome to Head-fi and I'm sorry for you wallet!

For travel I now use my IEMs. They isolate WAY better and sound WAY WAY better.

For the record, the Bose QC 15s are the most comfortable pair of headphones that I have ever worn

But as far as sound quality and isolation goes, I am more impressed with my 30 dollar JVCs and a pair of broken Altecs I picked up for 5

How is that any different than saying "gosh darn it", instead of the "using the lord's name in vain" version?
Not to be a Richard's nickname about or anything, just asking

I can remember stopping by a Bose store in the mall, on my way from a trip to the Apple Store. I was carrying a pair of RS-1s and the Bose guy asked me if they were an old pair of headphones. He thought I was pathetically listening to some junk because I couldn't afford a pair of Bose's cheapest offerings. He had no inkling that my cans cost four times the ones he was selling. Why should a Bose salesman know anything about sound equipment?

But honestly, I'd still give Bose its due. For DJ headphones, they're harmless. Let your friend have his moment in the sun. For his tastes, Bose may be the greatest thing ever made. Why deprive him of that? Most people are not audiophiles - and $300 for a pair of headphones is a "major investment." Around here, it's a down payment.

LOL I love your story :D

People look at me as I'm an ass when I listen to my STAX. They asked me is it from 80's and I said no, it's from 30's. They laughed so hard.
