The sense of smell analogy is a good one. Yeah, we definitely get accustomed to sound signatures. Not much is going on the mechanical side anyway.

I am thinking of testing this idea by not listening to my T5ps for a few weeks and using other phones in the mean time to see if after that period I will hear the harshness again or not, but I only have MX580s with me and I am not sure I can live with only these for so long.

burn-in.....well, used to be a sensitive topic but now, it's a crime to talk about burn-in.  not as bad as cables but still, better not talking about this.....

I am in the middle here thinking that both our brain and headphone burn-in play a big role and never care to argue about this, let everyone have their own opinion. In case of this thread however, I do not believe there are too many people reading it so I doubt a discussion could burst out ;).

i think it's actually both.  you need to get used to the sound and at the same time the headphone need some break-in.  the ear pad probably need some break-in too.  just like baseball glove.  this is a very sensitive topic, which i don't understand why.  i understand everyone having their own opinion but i don't understand why the non believer wouldn't let the believer having their own opinion.  even worst with cables though....

anyway, day 3 for t5p.  didn't spend any time with my home amps.  wonder how that would be as it starting to sound pretty good with just portable amps and ipods.  the soundstage is great.  separation is great even on portable amps.  still harsh on most tracks though.

p.s.:  some thought, is this sound as good as dt880(i'm only using ipod and sr71a)?  it's slightly darker than dt880.

I find it funny that people try to compare T5p to T1. From what I remember from listening to Joe007's T1 the two sound pretty similar (of course that's not a very reliable measure).
However, the comparison is rather moot (and that's aside from the closed vs open discussion or alleged portability),considering the T1 only sounded decent on Joe's 1k DAC1 + 1k SPL Auditor with Burson discrete opamp upgrades (and like poo on my budget gear :D), and T5p sounds decent from rather budget sources/amps I own....

very true.  i thought this headphone is meant to be portable. it's truly the best portable headphone i've had.  maybe i'll give ed8 a try(buy).  i heard ed8 a few times, even right before buying the headphone.  so far i like t5p better.

I have been thinking about trying ED8s to compare with T5ps and I think I will buy them at some point for this. I am not really atrated to them because of the flashy looks, but I would like to compare them sonically. What I love about T5ps as expensive phones is the fact that they do not attract atention by being flashy.

Yes, I am a Beyer guy for Dynamics. I once owned all the 600 ohm Beyers at once :)  But now have just the 770/600 and the T1.  I will get the T5 depending on what the new Beyer is.

the new tesla headphone, are you referring to the new dt1350?

he's referring to http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=auto&tl==en&u=http%3A%2F%2Ft.sina.com.cn%2Fbeyer (bottom post. linked from http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/542561/another-new-beyer-tesla-headphone)

It would be awesome if they make a Tesla monitor HP (ala DT48e but with a non head-eating headband/earpads/grip)
