Beyerdynamic DT 48 vs. Beyerdynamic DT 250

Mid range is recessed??? Huh? The dt250 is more recessed than the dt48. He should compare them to the k702 some time...they sound pale and thin in the mids compared to the dt48. Try Nat and Natalie Cole singing "Unforgettable". Not normally my favorite type of music, but those two voices sound unbelievable with the dt48. Joni Mitchell can really wow you with them too...not to mention Norah Jones. Haven't tried Linda Ronstadt yet, but my girlfriend has some of her CD's.

Theres a Natlie cole song that I never liked until I listened to them with the DT48.. The Piano, instruments, & here voice all sounds as realistic & being there as I'm typing this.. I actually like the song because of the DT48.. Forgot the title.. 1978 R&B hit.. But the piano at the start is eye watering worthy.. & her voice synergizes very well with the DT48.. The best I heard besides Linda Rodstad, & Donna Summer.. It's the type of recording you show off to impress your friend.. No compression at all, or very little at the very least.. Very well recorded in a good studio setting.

With the DT48, the seal, condition of pads, headband adjustment, earcup adjustment, and volume are all critical to getting the right bass from it. If your hair or sunglasses are breaking the seal, you will be disappointed in general. Again, fit is crucial. These arent open headphones where you can just throw them on.

Absolutely...baseball caps too can cause a poor seal! My electrician friend mentioned exactly what you wrote to me the other day when we were discussion impedance adapters and bass response.

I like the last line in your sig. EYEdROP! If I wasn't looking for the best phones for use in my home studio, I think I would have quit with the 240DF and the RP21...one smooth and bass heavy, the other more detailed and transparent and bass neutral...both definitely more than capable enough to enjoy the music.

Thank you Roger.. This really shed some light on the subject. & something I was not aware off.. It does, however, explain why the bass roll off wasn't the nail in the coffin so to speak when listening to the DT48..

So for most instruments a sub-bass rolloff isn't as bad as to make a headphone unbearable or unenjoyable IMO.

Hey, listen sorry if I have driven you guys a little nuts with my deliberation and pickyness! 

 I really enjoy discussing audio with you guys on here! So, my plan thus far is to contact Beyer (already have once in regards to animal products and the answers were totally pleasing) and ask them about their return policies and what not. Then, I am going to order the DT 48 E... but am not sure as to how many ohms (I believe the available selections are 25 and 200 ohms). What do you guys think?

The general consensus seems to be with the 25 ohms.  Higher ohm Beyers are usually better, partly because that's the impedance they have always been (770/880/990)
 
In this case, the 25ohm ones have been the standard for quite a while, and unless you have a particular need for a higher ohm headphone, that's what I would go with.
 
Mine drive quite nicely from a variety of amps, so you shouldn't have any problems that way.

Hmm, why is it that anyone would want higher or lower impendence? I understand that impedence is a form of energy resistance (or at least that is my n00b perspective) but what are the pros and cons to this? My knowledge in this area is quite lacking.

It has to do with controlling the voltage and current needed to go into a pair of headphones.
 
In a studio where a number of headphones have to be run in parallel (I think), too many low impedance phones would draw too much voltage (creating voltage swings), and keeping the impedance high is a way to regulate that.
 
In the case of the Beyerdynamic 770/880/990 drivers, I've heard that the higher impedance versions are able to have lighter drivers, probably because of those requirements.
 
Someone who actually understands electricity is welcome to correct me or explain this better.

Which one you choose depends entirely upon what amp you are plugging them into.

Hmm, well then what would be the best combination in your personal opinion? Perhaps there is a better combination with the 25 ohm than there is with the 200 ohm. Anyone have any amp suggestions?

Anyone know what these are worth listed as like new condition? They look the same as the set at the start of this thread except the cord comes off of each ear rather than just one side...does this mean they are an older model, and would that be a good thing since they are in like new condition?
