Beyerdynamic DT-1770: Product Info, Discussion and Impressions

I've heard from someone who I believe does know about this...

While I'm not much into voices in general I find that the DT1770 does them very well, offering a realistic and engaging presentation. To me it does away with two traits of the T5p I was not that content with: the missing upper bass (not that I need much of that, but the T5p simply misses that completely) and the over-present upper mids/treble. I don't think the T5p is strident, but the DT1770 is more... elegant. I think you should try it out... to me its the best Beyerdynamic headphone currently.

Thanks plakat!
I was deeply impressed with it when I gave it a listen on Beyerdynamics booth at...... I will try it out soon since I ordered it a few days ago. :)
There is a waiting time at the moment for it so I will have to wait 4-5 weeks.

Excellent closed headphones., probably the best sounding @this price range.
It covers all the bases very well, ... resolution, balance, bass, nice treble extension.
Probably best suited to those who want to dissect the music as well as listen.
Comfort is a 7 as the pleather pads get warm and the headphones are not the lightest.
What i noticed sound-wise,  when comparing the velour pads to the pleather is that You get a warmer and slightly less ultra-detailed presentation with the velour, however, this is not to be misunderstood as a severe difference, as both sets of pads allow the DT-1170 Pro to offer an amazing amount of detail.
Im pairing mine with a Roland Mobile UA-M10 and a Audient ID22 and it all sounds exceptional.
Very very good cans, well worth the money.
The Roland Mobile UA-M10 for $299.
Its fantastic.

The earpads on the TH-X00 look way to small. Also I have no idea where to order.. directly at Massdrop?

Deal is done...
It is no longer available. Don't know when they will decide to make more...
Your best bet will be the classified section.

They are small, but since they are also firm they will not bottom out or allow your ears to touch the driver (at least in my case).

Looks like I didn't make a mistake by selling my DT1770 before my TH-X00 arrives

Th-x00 is the reason I am selling my 1770's

I got them both yesterday. So far tried only the DT-1770 and it's gorgeous. No signs of excessive treble like with T70p, no lack of bass impact as it was the case with T5p. Overall very balanced and comfortbale cans. I use them on the go with my iBasso DX80 DAP that clearly has enough power to drive these 250 Ohms.

A pleasure to unpack the Fostex TH-X00 is ahead of me later today.

Care to elaborate why? They are about the same pricing range, what makes them better for you?

Just for fun I will make a few educated guess:

Price: 1770 is double the price of TH-X00 , but probably not double the performance
Aesthetic : I love the color black, but 1770 still looks way too black for me.
Mid : Fostex has a unique mid which can go toe to toe even with Gen 2 T1 (yes I had the opportunity to tried the new stuff on the day Gen 2 was released)
in contrast, 1770 is plain

Double the price is never double the performance (whatever that might even mean, its about as senseless as percentages of sound improvements...)

The DT1770 is a studio headphone, so sounding plain is actually a compliment. I have yet to hear the TH-X00 (mine is stuck at the customs office here...), but the TH900 and the TH600 are quite far from what I'd consider neutral, which the DT1770 aims to be (and is at least more so than both Fostex offerings I know). Preferring one over the other does not say anything about quality (which is not absolute anyway), but more about taste. And Fostex house sound may well be easier to sell...

My pair arrived yesterday and wow was I stunned the moment it is out of the box
Unlike my DT770 pro , DT1770 sounds good straight out of the box, but it is only been 20 hours so I will do a follow up later.

First and foremost : DT1770 blow DT770 pro out of the water
The official website claims that DT1770 is a
Closed studio reference headphones for mixing, mastering, monitoring and recording

Does the claim stands true? ABSOLUTELY
When I first play Eric Clapton from my Audinst HUD-mx2 + Asgard combo
I never realize there were that many people attending the concert
And DT1770 continues to perform even when I drive it using MX2 alone

Next comes Phantom of the Opera (Original 1986 London Cast)
If the cast member moved around, you will know how many steps do they take
The last can (I had the chance to auditioned ) that squeeze so much detail out of a recording was LCD2
consider the price difference I am happy with the performance

Lastly I plug it into my iPhone 4S (you know you are an audiophile when you choose a can over a smartphone)
and play my usual collection: Back in Black, Appetite for Destruction, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin , you get the idea
and it sounds almost as good as plugging into my DAC
Half of the $600 probably goes into making DT1770 drivable: this can demands very little power to use, and a little push goes a long way

Yes such performance comes with trade-offs

This can is punishing: any imperfection on the high frequency will sound harsh
(around 10kHz, don't expect measurements from freewares to be precise)

It is not to the ground neutral either: although the bass is punchy and beefy (compare to HD600),
the emphasis is clearly on the mid to high (or maybe I am just too used to HD600)

Lastly is the presentation of the vocal: details without flavor
DT1770 is no Denon, no Grado, no Ultrasone, and it's vocal will never be as good as other brands
DT1770 sound dry even compare against its own family:
The vocal of DT1770  is neither warm and sweet, unlike that of the T1, rather a focus on the techniques of the singer
Just imagine kale versus wave potato chips: both have texture, but almost everyone can agree on which one people will rather binge on

I did compare DT1770 with few other "studio headphones" , such as Shure 440 , Sony MDR 7506 , Audio-Technica M50 , AKG 240 MKII
and something interesting comes up.
Not a single can is neutral: each and every can is well prices for what it is intended to "monitor".
However after a few rounds of comparison DT1770 easily came out on top

Quick conclusion:
is DT1770 better than DT770 pro? YES
is every last drop of detail squeezed out of the music? ALMOST
is this headphone the best when it comes to value? NO
is this headphone worth the $600 price tag?
YES, if you find using ANY headphone amp annoying
NO , if you owned a MJOLNIR 2 or any powerful headphone amp

IS THIS THE NEW STANDARD FOR STUDIO HEADPHONE?  YES

Some headphone porn below:

I hope they understand what too much of the same color does to your eyes
I love the color black, but this is too much for me
FYI my desk is not white, those are printing papers

Finally Beyerdynamic is being generous about accessories

This is what I dreamed for: earpad slider
just put the earpad in , spin it a few times, and the whole thing will fit in place

Next : the most "dollar-for-dollar" headphone versus the new studio reference

The all black colour scheme is a feature to me, not an issue.

Me as well... At last a really Ford-quote worthy headphone

Thanks to @iamvincent for the impressions. I do not follow all points (e.g. I see the drier presentation of voices vs the T1 as advantageous for a studio headphone), but that's fine.
