Official statement from Beyer regarding COP vs. COP Plus is that the latter is the same headphone, just with additional accessories. There may be some unit to unit variation of course.
And yes, they are definitely fun. It is not always necessary to adhere to strict high-end guidelines to have fun with music ;-)

Btw.: the weather looks much better in Portugal...

Are you guys absolutely sure that nothing was changed on the cop plus? Saw 2 reviews.... One by dale thorn claiming it sounded slightly different and better than the 2012 model and i also saw other review on a tech something forum or whatever was the name claiming that the padding is now better and that they are slightly less bassy....

Really cant understand why some bash the cop plus (i have the cop plus, never tried the other one) so badly... Unless someone really wants a flatter more audiophile sound i think they are pretty good and better than headphones like for example the sony mdr 1r. Yes the mids are slightly and the sound a bit warm but overall it is a very nice tunning. I used them on setting 3 by the way....

I am a guy that likes very much the hd25, the over ear momentum and m50x.... They may not as good as some of this cans but i would also not claim that they are far behind.

Its just that some people make them seem like a piece of rubbish and so far thats not my opinion at all.

Funny thing....there was three versions of the COP.  The original COP, COP+ (which was just a COP with a COP+ sticker put on it and added accessories thrown in) and then the new COP+ with the newly printed box art.   I used to own the COP+ with the sticker.  Which was basically just the original from 2012 with extras.  It had an issue, I had to return it.  Recently, I bought the COP+ again.  This time I got the one with the new box.  I also felt it had a different sound.  I felt like the bass was less across the board, the audio was clearer and the vocals were actually forward instead of distant like the previous model.

Who knows, maybe it's in my mind.  Without both to A/B I can't be absolutely sure, maybe my ears just changed.  I felt they were different sounding too though based purely on memory.

Was your COP+ the new box version or the one with the sticker?  If you had one with the sticker, then I guess I'm just crazy and hearing things differently the second time around.  But if you had a new box, I dunno.  Maybe there is a difference, but I could still be crazy.

I don't know if they sound any different, but I know for sure that they have gotten more comfortable. Both the headband and earpads on the newer models are made out of this softer synthetic leather material than the older ones. I know since I had to replace those parts with new ones. Also the cable feels softer to the touch like a silicone rubber (making it tangle free as well) compared to the standard cable you get with the older model (which is made of the same material to the cables on the DT models).

Yea, I vaguely remember a difference there too.  It could be new ear pads causing a slight change in sound.  Also, maybe it just in my mind.  I do know ear pad changes can cause noticeable sound changes.  It's one of the first things I learned from this site.  Someone said to change the ear pads of a particular headphone to this and you'll notice a difference.  Boy was he right.  At the time, I thought, what does ear pads matter to sound.  I didn't know any better.

Heck I even tried the 770 velour ear pads on the COP+ and the 880 velour ear pads on the COP+.  I assumed (not a good idea) that it would be the same thing.  Not at all.  770 isolated in and out much better.  Kept bass in.  The 880 had nearly no isolation and all the bass just completely vanished.  I like the new stock pads the 770 velour's are really nice too.  Sound and comfort.

Mine were the old (first) box with the cop+ sticker....

Thought it may be of interest...

I just picked up a pair of the COP from Amazon. I placed my order for the "COP(discontinued by mfg.)" because I knew they were the same model as the + without the extra cable and accessories and thus were $30USD cheaper. Lo and behold, I received the COP Plus, incidentally both new model box AND sticker. I guess they wanted consumers to be aware that it included the cable with remote as the only indication is in small print at the very bottom. Easy to overlook sans sticker.

Only briefly listened to a few familiar high quality tracks with DAP+Amp with no EQ either from amp or software, and it didn't make me want to immediately return it. So I guess that's a good thing. :)

My biggest concerns are: the low impedance, as I like what I would guess to be above average listening levels. Resolving ability. As much as I appreciate well mastered music and the ability to listen with incredible clarity, I am beginning to think that I prefer a friendlier tone as I find vocals can get to be artificial and almost sounds a bit like a generated voice rather than a human when listening to headphones that are known for their resolution. Much like the first CD players sounded when they first came out. DAC's have come a long way since then! I want clarity without that artificial presence.

Opinions seem to be all over the place about these, so I'm eager to have an extended listen and give them a good workout. I'm really trying to find a decent set of phones that I can enjoy high fidelity once again as I've recently changed residence and no longer have the room for my excellent floor speakers and audio equipment to listen optimally anymore :(. I have always had decent IEM's, but they were never my primary source of audio. I'm looking for that big sound again and I hope I can find it at a reasonable sub $1,000 price tag. I'm willing to pay for the sound I'm looking(listening?) for, but I'm not going to pay $300-$700 more for a small difference in sound quality. I have what I would consider exceptional hearing and I can tell the difference between lossy and lossless formats so I am pretty picky when it comes to my music. It's both a blessing and a curse I guess. I'm not quite an audiophile as I don't listen to sine waves and pink noise for my enjoyment, but I appreciate and understand quite well what it takes to make good audio, both from a musician's and a technological standpoint.

I paid $169.00 USD a few days ago, so if you are looking to buy this model, order the one that reads "(discontinued by mfg.)" instead of the post for the plus model as they'll send you the plus model and you'll end up saving $30. I'd do it soon because I purchased a pair of ATH-M50x's about two weeks ago for my daughter @$119USD and today they are $149USD. They went up about two or three days later as I really thought they were a good all around set, so I was going to order another pair. I'd probably be happy with them, but I'd like to try to do a margin better. I thought the vocals sounded computer like after extended listening time(2 or more hours at a time), and were recessed a bit for my tastes. I could definitely live with them, but I'd like to find something without compromising. We'll see if this turns out to be a good purchase or not.

Oh, first post, but I've been a long time lurker/reader. I just wanted to pass along the info on what I thought was a good deal for anyone in the market for this set of headphones. Didn't mean to get so long winded, but talking about audio does that to me. Good to be part of the community finally. :)

Why, thank you antoniolin. I only join forums after lurking for awhile, in some cases years. Even then it is only a small select few. Have to be judicious with our time and where we spend it right? I feel good about joining already! ;)

Hello!:)

A COP+ user here.

So some time ago i ordered the mass loading and damping kit and the alpha pads. Haven't done the mod yet. But for some time i've been actually thinking of selling the COP and getting the 770PRO (250ohm), so i'm wondering whether it's the better approach? As far as i undertan tht DT770 has better drivers? But reading here how someone put their COP drivers into DT770 cups. Why? What was the reasoning?

Has anyone mass loaded their COP-s and used better pads? What was the result? Would the same have better result with the DT770s? Considering the same kit and pads also fit for for these.

Thanks for the opinions:)

I'm just going to be blunt and say that I think you shouldn't waste your time modding the COP+. There are so many options in this range that are better, including other Beyerdynamic models. I returned the COP+ because it would clip at reasonable levels and a host of other issues. My journey took me to V-Moda M-100's and from there I bought the Fostex TH-500RP which have become(hands down) my go to headphones. I still use the V-Moda for portable use. I also purchased the Massdrop AKG K7XX and while they are OK, the Fostex are superior in every way. I'm tempted to purchase the TH-900, but I am waiting to see how the prices fair as they are close to $1,400 for the MKII. I am chasing small percentages I think, as the TH-500RP are quite excellent, and a bargain at even the full price, though you should be able to find them for less than half.

Thanks for your response!

Interesting. Though i'm not going over €200 range for now, that's for sure. So i guess used cans is also one of the ways to go.

Besides the DT770, i'm also thinking about the Argon which is a highly modded 2nd gen Fostex T50RP:
http://www.modhouseaudio.com/argon/argon

My main criteria are soundstage and imaging. I think the COP+ (i have the latest revision with the non-sticker box, though i'm not sure it has anything other different with the older versions) has pretty nice imaging, soundstage could be a bit better. They also don't clip for me. At least through E11k. But i think amping them is actually useless as 16ohm just doesn't need it. So that's why the 250ohm 770 interests me more - it can perform differently with different amps. Maybe:)

Hello,

Hmm, I think you have in backwards. I'm one of the users that modified their COPs, and what I did was take either the better 770 or 1770 drivers and implanted those into the COP housing (not the other way around) added along with absorption and dampening materials. My reason for using the COP housing is to take advantage of the variable bass ports as well as the flat cups which work better acoustically with my own mods.

Hey! Thank you for the answer.I also answered to Sm0ld3r, but my post was "arrested" for hyperlinking to an external source. Hopefully it gets released. :)

Anyway, i was reeferring to user Armaegis here:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/633413/beyerdynamic-custom-one-pro-review/360#post_12356646

I took the COP driver and baffle assembly and dropped it into a DT770 shell

Also question regarding the Alpha pads: Do i need to change only the cushions and not the included foams? I mean the Alpha Dog cup foams shouldn't even fit the COP/770, right?

Ah, Armaegis. I see. He used his COP housing for his t50rp drivers, so he was left with extra COP drivers not in a housing. I think he probably already had extra DT bodies, so he put the COP drivers into those. It's more than likely that it was not because that they were a particularly good pairing, just that he could was all.

You should use the Beyerdynamic foam inserts. Thought, if you want you can test between no foam and foam, depending on if you want more or less treble respectively.
