Yep, as I have reported elsewhere, the current version DT770 is FAR from a bass monster. Very far. It sounds like a closed DT880, NOT like a closed DT990.

I look forward to your review!

I always wondered this, but if you were curious with how the 600ohm ones sound, couldn't you just make a 350ohm resistor cable?

No, as I understand it, there are some coil construction differences in the 600 ohm version - just adding resistance would not give you the full picture.

Yes, that will only test amp's ability to drive 600 ohm load

While on another quest - I noticed an addition to the Manufaktur listings - Gaming headphones (based on dt770/32). So, took a couple of minutes designing a pair - and this is the result:

They seem ideal to me

It took me a whole year to find out how spectacular my DT990-600 can be. Thought I'd link my report to this thread (hoping it may be of some use):

BTW, mine have leather pads. What could possibly be wrong with leather, people?!

Sad to hear Beyer has discontinued the leather option. Do I get it right? (Haven't checked the website.)

IMO the dt990/600 are the best buy for relatively current stock headphones. IMO Genuine Leather Earpads are not the best choice for either dt880, or dt990. While I prefer Velours on my dt990/600, all of my Darth variations are paired with Gen. Leather Earpads..........the Genuine Leather Earpads are also currently available with the Beyerdynamic Gaming headphones. I sold my dt880/600. Today, my Beyers are dt990/600/velour earpads. My X-Deep Darths have Gen. Leather Earpads, and my 32ohm (I supply 32ohm drivers) Darths also have Gen. Leather earpads.
Simply put - Gen. Leather earpads are not the best choice for open or semi-open headphones. ....whilst, Gen. Leather is supreme for closed headphones. Surely Beyerdynamic also came to the same conclusion and opted to eliminate the option for both dt880, and dt990.

Yes, that is one of the main benefits of the 600 ohm version are the smoother highs.

Yup. Despite comments re sibilence with Beyers etc. - there is none in the 600 ohm versions. You do, however, need good amping. Those who make such comments have NOT tried the 600 ohms. I luv 32ohm Darths, dt990/600, X-Deep Darths, as well as Grado RS-1/flats, and Joe Grado HP-2.........also AKG k340 modded (Sym., Opera)

Thanks, BushGuy!

This is puzzling to me. I'm a satisfied leather-pad customer -- now that the phones are well-amp'd (a year later). Do you know for a fact that Beyer's reason for dropping the leather option is that they, too, think the DT990 sounds better with velour pads?

Cheers,

I wouldn't be at all surprised that the issue with the leather pads is a supplier problem and has nothing to do with the sound. I, too, prefer the leather pads on my DT990/600's.

No, I don't know for sure what Beyer is thinking. But, it does not seem that Larry (Headphile) has any trouble getting the Gen. Leather earpads.....nor have I had a problem - so it does not suggest that there is a supplier problem. Furthermore, Beyer lists Gen. Leather available for Gaming, dt770 HiFi, and Aviation headphones..........besides the Gen. Leather headband covers.
