As far as I know HTC doesn't explicitly state a dedicated DAC but the SQ from the M8 and M9 are favorites here. I bet the HTC 10 will be great too, but has anyone tried out the sound from their near-TOTL like the A9 or the One ME? I'm looking for a mid-priced audiophile phone that has a 5-inch screen. 5.5 inches is too big to me, and unfortunately eliminates nearly all the phones mentioned here eg Vibe X3, the Vivos, Meizus and V10.

Also considering the M9 since it's cheaper now but how's the battery life? Heard it's just average.

There was once the "Marshall London" smartphone. 4.7" screen, audio heaven, but quite mediocre as a smartphone.
The Vivo V3 will have a 5" screen and will be released soon, maybe take a look at that?

The battery life of the M9 is indeed quit average, not bad though: http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_m9-review-1230p3.php
The M8 does a better job: http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_m8-review-1062p3.php

spent 3 days with lenovo vibe x3 and neutron player is killing it.. I thought poweramp is better but i was wrong.. ..completely satisfied with the phone's audio quality.  Dolby feature is not that useful for audio files. Doesn't make a big difference. People who are looking for sub $300 ess sabre phone this is the best you can get.

Pros
-Good display
-Excellent performance
-Clear audio output
-Great battery life
-Strong radio signals

Cons
-Design could be considered too simplistic for some
-Software experience can vary based on reseller
-Poor sunlight readability
-Low speaker volume

Rom development is not bad either at XDA. Maybe you've found yourself a gem here for $100.
