If you have a good sound-card you might not need an amp, just improve the opamp in the SC and spend the rest on headphones.

How about the Fostex...

Really dont like the look of the fostex. I think Im leaning towards the audio technica art series. Theres a second hand a700 going on ebay, but Im not sure whether to just shell out on the a700500x/700x/a900x instead.

Been doing some more research on the shure 940 and the reviews make them sound perfect for vocals, but since they are detail monsters wont they reveal the flaws in a lot of j-pop songs which I have a sneaking suspicion arent mastered properly. Plus they seem more suted to a classical/acoustic genre rather than genres with synthesised music which pop tends to be.

I like my ad700's for jpop
as far as jrock gose, I had to mess with the equalizer abit to get them to shine
TBH the ad-700's are grate for a lot of things if your good with a equalizer

don't you find the ad700's lacking bass? What kind of pop are you listening to?

I listen to a lot of J-Pop stuff (mostly female vocals) and i think my Shure SRH-440 (840 pads) sounds great for that. It may sound a bit bright without the 840 pads though.

You can check my lastfm profile to see what kind of j-pop i listen.

Hi - my first post here :)
Can you also recommend earphones good for female vocals?  I prefer earbuds but will consider value IEMs ~$100.

Just a note on my favorite band - DREAMS COME TRUE.  Miwa the vocalist has a good range and is great with ad-libs, and Masa the composer/arranger plays the 6-string bass.  They have a big-band sound and almost always employs a 5-piece horn section.  Though categorized as JPOP, they're really versatile (root in jazz, funk, etc).
So, I guess I would want something with good extended bass response, tight but not overwhelming, as well as clear/smooth highs.

Thanks!

I really enjoyed the ESW9 (quite warm, but very good at vocals, though a bit slow for j-rock I think).
I am currently on some Fostex T50RP, slightly modded, and really enjoy them too ! They are really great, need some power, but still pretty good (good soundstage, beautiful mids, speed is here, details are plenty, but really enjoyable).
I think orthodynamics work very well with j-music (wonderful mids, speed), so consider the Fostexes or old orthos, that can be found cheap sometimes
