Possibly the Denon AHD 2000 if you can still find one. Lots of folk here like the Beyerdynamic DT 880 or 990. It's really a matter of taste. Have you been here?: http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/innerfidelitys-wall-fame-full-size-sealed
Really good opinions and recommendations. Good luck.

My opinion is the AKG Q701. But it really depends on what you want a set of headphones to do. The Q701 really does play most genres very well. I find them to be best with electronic, jazz and classical. They are also very comfortable to wear for long periods of time. Tons of detail. Tightest bass I've ever heard as well. My favorite for the 200-300 dollar range.

Right now you can get the HD600 for $300 through razordogaudio.com with coupon code RAZORDOG100. That's the best $300 you can spend on headphones IMO.

+1.  The 600 series of Sennheiser are great headphones. Love the HD650 and if you can scrape up another $100 it would be well worth it. I wasted a lot of money early on by not stepping up.
600 I'm sure would be a good value at $300.

Except you can't get a D2000 for $300 any more (or ever again for that matter).

Maybe you can find them used on the for sale section here.

Also checkout the V-Moda M100, Sennheiser Momentum, Logitech UE6000, PSB M4U.

EDIT: Those are all over-ears. If you want something more portable I'd checkout the Beyerdynamic DT 1350, Sennheiser Amperior, and Audio Technica ESW9A among others.

I think I should clarify myself. I want a over the ear headphone, closed back, neutral sound, and a very good sound stage under 300 bucks. Any Ideas?
