Audiophile iOS audio player

Ok hi all! I bought Relisten on a whim. Holy moly I'm glad I did. I started with audyessy. Then I got can opener. Then neutron which I really loved. All head fiers let me say that this is the best music app out there. I'm hearing details in all my favorite music that I never knew existed. The negatives: expensive. No instructions so it's a play what sounds best to you presets game. Also the bass is lackluster but if you have an amp with bass boost or car audio, that problem is solved. I listened to the dark side of the moon on can opener, neutron, and Relisten. There was a huge difference in volume, clarity, detail, separation in Relisten. I cannot recommend this enough. It's got some kinks for sure but at the end of the day better sound trumps a friendly interface, this is the best there is. I highly encourage you to try it yourself!

ok, davescleveland and willyvlyminck, i am intrigued!!  but would you guys enlighten us a bit more since the app store description is just some marketing fluff?  also, there is only one review (i think its you dave?) and i haven't seen any specific information on functionality, design, music integration, etc...

for instance: does it play FLAC files?  highest bitrates?  DSD?  (i assume NO, it seems to just use iPod library)
how does the loudness dial actually work?  is it like a gain on top of the iOS volume?
would this matter much if using an external DAC?

i really don't like assuming anything, i am just trying to get some solid info on a music app that costs $50!!

thanks fellas

They've been working on Relisten Player Lite and mentioned it here

No love for FLAC with latest version 1.0.2 yet, maybe next release?

Once Relisten Player Lite is ready, some of us could try it out and we'll see how it goes.

Like you said for now, it plays only your iTunes library, but they already work on further updates, to broaden the possibilities, even HiRes is on the cards. This is only the beginning, but already worth the 50 dollar because your iTunes library will never have sound better and can easily hold up soundwise with daps costing a lot more. On the technical side, better to contact Relisten on Facebook, as this is mostly latin to me, just did buy it because the app did intrigued me, and I am glad I did.

believe me, when you hear your iTunes library, you won't bother if Flac or Apple Lossless as both are non compressed files. I download Flac from Bandcamp which I transfer to my FiiO x1 and I use iTunes for my iPhone/ iPod Touch 5g, and with Relisten the music sounds at least equal as good if not better, I will experiment with the Fidelio M2L headphone to see how another DacAmp will affect the player

This is only true for the headphone jack. One needs to bypass the internal DAC of the iDevice, which is limited to 16 bit 44.1kHz. Use an external DAC and the iDevice will pass the high res files right through!

Here is an article that might help:

http://www.macworld.com/article/2064868/high-fidelity-how-to-get-lossless-and-high-res-audio-on-ios-devices.html

There are some newer DACs out specifically for iDevices now:
NuForce iDo
Beyer Dynamic a200p (Astell n Kern rebrand)
Vmoda Vamp Verza

Just to name a few. Enjoy those hi res files!

Sorry to necro rise this old post...

unfortunately that article is wrong.

The external dac/amps still only play back at 16/44 (some say 16/48), I have owned and demoed many of them.

We can add hi-res to iOS devices (Touch/iphone) but it gets down sampled anyway,  the only way to get the hi-res native playback at the moment is via the CCK or using an ipad.

I think Cypher Labs says it best...

After extensively AB-ing the Relisten Player Lite version 1.0.4 with the 3 dollar SonicMax Pro v1.8.2 from BBE Sound, I personally think Relisten sounds really really good but SonicMax comes very close and offers more options to restore clarity and definition to the high and center frequencies and also can 'boost' the low frequencies as well, but Relisten's lows are tighter and the mid frequencies are more refined but it lacks the subtle clarity you are able to restore with SonicMax if needed. Would I buy Relisten at 50$? No. At 25$? YES only because the UI is very nice compared to the very old looking SonicMax UI....

It may sound expensive , but as in my case I can use the app on my iPhone, iPod, iPad mini , and the app will evoluate and get better. There is no Dap this good at 50 dollar either

I agree with you there, RP sounds really really good. All I'm trying to say is SM offers more bang for your buck while sounding close enough, at least in my particular setup. Haven't tried my Westone 4 IEM though... No affiliations with BBE either, just sharing my thoughts. Don't get me wrong, RP does sound better but not by a landslide :)
