Doesn't justify it IMO. The AD700's is fantastic value for the dosh.

I disagreed after listening to both - and that is why I bought the AD900

beefy,
did you ever get to try the ad2000s? I am still curious how the ad900 sounds relative to the ad2ks. Wonder if what Marcus in the australian headphone forums says is now the one that agrees with my ears. He told me he prefers the ad900 because the ad2000 is too technical sounding. Well, to me they lack micro detail actually since they are so focused with the macrodynamic side of things. Ive always been wondering if the ad900s are more relaxed and have never really gotten a straight answer from anyone. Seems like these cans havent been compared with other cans enough.

With any good you begin to suffer from severe diminishing returns the further up in pricing you go. A part of the fun of this hobby (and many others...) is determining what is right for oneself

Couldn't have put it better. Right now, I'm happy with the AD700. But someday, I might try the AD900 and/or AD2000 to hear firsthand if they're worth the price hike to me.

I checked my records and I found that I gave some wrong descriptions based on my memories. I am sorry and I want to correct myself. Here are the right descriptions:

ATH-AD700 all-arounder, plays anything, including fast music (metall). Endless soundstage and rare involving (almost hypnotic) abilitiy make it best choice for new age, ambient and, probably, trance. Though it lacks bass impact for trance for me. Comfortable. Overall better than HD595, excluding vocals.
ATH-AD900 great all-arounder with no flaws, very accurate bass. Does not involve like AD700, soundstage is even wider. Right choice for "the only headphone, no amps" approach.
ATH-AD1000 In to face type. Highs, soundstage, vocal, acoustic instruments - very nice; bass lacks depth and quality; comfortable. Reminds AD700 with its involving power, shines with new age dreamings.

Why do you think its not as involving? What does it lack in comparison?

It doesn't lack anything. Probably a case of the AD900 being more detailed.

aaahhh then I think I'll enjoy them.

The thing that confused me with Marcus assesment of the ad2000s is that he said they are technically better cans but not as fun as the ad700/ad900 because they are too detailed. Now that I have some ad700s and had the ad2000s, I can say that is not exactly the reason why the ad2000s aren't really as musically involving as the ad700s. The ad700s are just more musically involving to me because they don't have the extreme colorations the ad2000 has in its tonality. The ad2000 had a cupped hands coloration that is 90% absent on the ad700s. The mids were too extreme on the ad2ks making the upper highs dissapear. The ad2ks had more bass punch though so it caught up with the extreme mids making them sound dark and dry in overall character. The ad700s are lively because of the highs being present but not nearly as punchy or solid sounding as the ad2k.

Now, I'm hoping I can get a good compromise with the ad900s getting some ad2k punch and solidity while building on the ad700s lively character.

I prefer the 900 to the 700.

I use both but the 900 has an edge on the clarity. I also have the AD1000 which I find a little difficult to get on with. My experience with the AD1000 has put me right off going for the AD2000 since there is a 'glassy' quality to the sound of the 1000 which I guess people translate as uninvolving.

The 900 has a good combination of clarity and warmth with no bass boost so voices (spoken) sound very natural. For me, the 900 is the sweetspot and the 700 is good value.

I also like the AD900 more than the AD700. Great cans, it's taken almost 3 years for me to decide it may be time to try something different. D2000 was a disaster, HD650 coming this weekend, can't wait to try em. Wanted something different to complement, not a replacement. Joined the AD900/HD650 Club

Surely I prefer the AD900 more than the AD700, they are just better overall cans with the same sound signature as the AD700. I would definitely pick up a pair of AD900 to replace the AD700 if I have plenty of money, however AD700 and AD2000 are quite enough to make me satisfied now

@iancraig10: FWIR the AD2000 are very different from AD1000 and certainly very different from AD700/900. The AD2000 are much more concentrated in the lows and the mids, they are not as bright, too much treb and 'glassy' like AD1000 I believe. Oh, are the AD1000 have much more detail than AD900? I think sometimes we can exchange my AD2000 and your AD1000 if you like, since we both in the UK, I'm really wonder how AD1000 sound as well

Interesting perspective. I still really love my AD900, but am enjoying the ESW9 as a diversion. They don't have quite as much detail or clarity as the AD900, but have much fuller bass and an overall warmer and smoother tone. I *really* enjoy them for anything with brass, woodwind, powerful female vocals.

And secretly at the back of my mind, I've always thought that the HD600 would be my ideal phone, though never had a chance to hear them. So I'd be interested to see what a fellow AD900 liker has to say about the HD650
