It makes the Ether look (and sound) like the bargain of the century now.

I wonder how much headphone manufacturers are willing to push the envelope in terms of price rather than performance.  I'm not saying that you wouldn't get a better headphone and if you want to spend that kind of money it's your business.  But is Audeze looking at the HE-1000 which costs twice as much as Hifiman's former flagship and people are buying it.  People will pay $4,400 for a Stax SR009 (plus the price of an amp) and $5,500 for an Abyss.  Why won't they pay 4 grand for an LCD-4.  No increase in performance has really matched the increase in price, not that anyone would expect a headphone to be twice as good if you pay twice as much.  But does Audeze really need to double the price to turn a profit on the LCD-4?

It will go on until we stop purchasing them.

Looking at the speaker market, I don't think we're anywhere near that point yet.  Dozens of companies have 6 figure speakers for sale at the top of their product lines.

Audeze would be stupid to NOT sell a TOTL headphone that was comparable in price to the Abyss (etc), it's Business 101 - supply and demand.

Some seem to forget that this model of product pricing is unanimous across the board, in any emerging industry, as if the headphone market is some idealistic haven occupied by enthusiasts and music lovers only. It's not, it's a thriving market of buyers and sellers. Opportunity knocks. Expect to see a **** ton more high end cans come out over the next few years as companies try to cash in.

No one is forced to buy anything.

Anyone here go into car showroom and start complaining that the newest, highest spec model costs too much?

If anything, we should be thankful. In the short years that follow, the latest headphone tech will trickle down into the 'lower' models, benefitting everyone. Again, as per any other industry.
