ATH-W1000X Thread!

Hey guys,

I'm having a very difficult time making a final decision on my next headphone purchase. I'm upgrading from the ATH-A900 model, and since I liked the sound signature of that model, I figure it would make sense to stick to the AT brand.

The W1000X is currently the number one contender for me, but in my obsessive-research-anticipating-buyer's-remorse session, I've run across some complaints that have prevented me from pulling the trigger. Specifically, that this is not a good headphone for more aggressive music (rock, metal, electronica, as opposed to classical/jazz/folk). I listen to "aggressive" and "non-aggressive" music in approximately equal proportions, so it would be a bummer to gimp 50% of my music collection by buying the wrong headphone.

I've also considered the A2000X, but the lack of reviews for it online have prevented me from considering it as strongly as the W1000X.

So, I was curious if anyone had any opinions on the versatility of W1000X vs A2000X or another similar headphone.

It is right that w1000x don't handle rock as good as some others headphones but they are very good for electronica. The trebles are not rolled off so you need to listen to goods recordings to make them shine. By good recordings i'm not saying only .flac even mp3 228 kbps could sound greats

I think AD2000 will suit you better, only if you don't mind they are very open headphone.

i love how w1000x sounds ( it's my wishlist definitely ) but it's too pricey for me... any suggestions a cheaper alternative that sounds similar to w1000x? i'm using dacport as dac/amp. thank you...

I JUST bought a W1000X from the AT distributor at a fair.
Funny thing is, they have no stock and will have to wait till mid-Oct.
The long arduous wait begins...
 
It came with a leather case, so I went home with it empty!
 
Anyway, do you guys know how much the case is worth?
I can't seem to find any info online.
 
Was thinking of selling since I may not have use for it.
It looks like the one in post 605, according to what was displayed there.
I haven't actually opened it up yet...

I am in need of closed headphones that are great all-purpose cans. I will be watching movies, playing video games, and listening to music with my purchase. My music is widespread but consists densely of acoustic/folk/classical music. I'm hoping for great separation and clarity accompanied with a large soundstage. Let me know how you think the W1000X will fit my needs.

w1000x are superb for acoustic, folk, jazz, etc.
But they don't quite suit BSO, operas and stuff like that.

Thanks for the reply. That sounds about right. Does it require a dedicated amp? I use the AudioEngine D1 DAC/amp and AudioQuest DragonFly.

It will sounds good even straight from ipod.
 
But definitely will improve when you change to good desktop rig. So I think it's deserve to get a dedicated (and) good amp

Can anybody compare the W1000X to the A900X? I currently own the A900X and would like to know what improvements to expect.

Weird.. It feels like my W1000X suddenly became a bit less sparkly sounding in the past few hours.

Thought I would chime in here as I just received my W1000X, it's also my first AT can aswell and to say I'm impressed is an understatement. I bought them on a whim knowing they seemed like a gamble for my signature preferences but really wasn't expecting them to sound as good as they do and this is all unamped at the moment.

Question! Looking at your signature and profile, it would seem that you like the W1000X more than the Ultrasone Signature Pro? How do/did they fare against one another?

Actually I also will rate Grandioso higher than ULS Sig Pro
