Astell & Kern SR15: A&norma Impressions & Reviews
Dec 1, 2018 at 8:22 AM Post #406 of 2,727
I'm selling my FiiO X5 Gen 3 today and with the money im going to either buy a Norma SR15 for the same reasons. bad software support, buggy interface and lack luster sound.
I want to get the SR15 but the only fear i have is that it wont run my headphones. yes i use 2 portable headphones H6 Gen 2 and B&W P7 wired. which i know the SR15 can drive. but i would like to know if it can also drive my DT1990 Pro. im not sure how power hungry the HD660S are but if they are anything similar to my DT1990 pros then i'll be happy. :)

The Sennheiser hd660s are 150 Ohms and the Ultrasone Edition M Plus are 30 Ohms, which sounds easy to drive, but surprisingly they need quite some power too.
I had the total same fear to be "underpowered" with the Sr15, but I am so happy I chose it, it drives them both so easily and makes them shine!

Thanks, it was a concern of mine that it wouldnt run full sized headphones around 150-250 ohms :)

I wish my Fii0 M9 looked as cool as this!

(I am all about Qobuz, noise cancelling & LDAC)

Suggestion for Astell&Kern:

Please create a mini DAP like Hidizs AP80, Hiby R3!
I think their form factors are amazing... I hope you guys create something like that.
Maybe AK240 sound quality packed into a form factor of Shanling M1?

Have you pressed "External USB" button in Notification Panel of SR15?
It should be pressed, if you want to use Norma as a "transport" in pair with some other DAC.
I've just tested this feature with CEntrance DACportable - no music from DAC until you press this button (it also automatically sets volume to "max" on SR15).

I have tried to connect the SR 15 to my Chord Hugo 2. I have used different connecting cables, but cannot get the SR 15 to play through the Hugo. I have repeatedly try to press the "External Dac" button, but it does not react. Does that mean that my SR 15 is defective? I also sent this question to AK, but received no reply. Great customer service.

@diver110 Just want to confirm which button you pressed as there is no External DAC button on the SR15.

When you connect the SR15 to the Hugo 2, you should see the External USB icon light up if the Hugo 2 is turned on. Once lit, you want to press the External USB icon. After a minute or so, you will see a message show under the External USB icon that a device is connected.

If it does not work, try soft resetting the SR15 by holding down the power button for 10 - 15 seconds. The player will turn off. Press the power button to turn it on and try again.

Can you also please let me know when you contacted customer support and how you contacted them so I can follow up with the correct team to address why you never received a response. If you want to PM me, please do.

Well. the plot has thickened a bit. I have tried to get this to work any number of times. I even took it into the dealer for the Hugo, who also is a dealer for AK (Grammaphone), and the dealer could not get it to work. The External USB icon (which I called a button in my post) did not come on. I have tried two sets of connecting cables, the one that came with the Hugo, and two cables, a micro USB to a female USB and then male USB to a micro USB. SR 15 was definitely on more than a minute while using the cable that came with the Hugo. But I was not sure I had left it on that long using the other set of cables. So I tried again and, to my surprise, the icon came on! But the Hugo would not recognize it. So I rebooted both the Hugo and the SR 15. And now the External USB icon again did not come on (and the Hugo still did not recognize it). But then I disconnected the SR 15 and reconnected it and bingo, the icon came on. But, the Hugo still does not recognize it. I did notice that under the "USB mode", "DAC input" does not come on, but that may be for when one wants to use the DAC in the SR 15. I have had no troubles with the Hugo to date, so I am a little skeptical that the problem lies there, but I can contact them. Any additional words of wisdom?

I believe I sent the query to AK last Monday.

Can you please let me know what firmware is your player running?

I don’t understand the question. Both the SR 15 and Hugo are running whatever software they came with.
Sorry, what version software is the SR15 running? There was a bug in an earlier version regarding USB output that was fixed. The current firmware version of the SR15 is 1.11. You can check the firmware version by going to settings, System information. Second line is Firmware version.

Oh. While it updated when I initially set it up (or at least said it did), in fact it is running 1.10. How do I update it?

There was an update this week that contained bug fixes and OS optimizations.

To update, turn on WiFi. Make sure you are connected to the internet. A message should pop up alerting you to a software update. If one does not, go to settings, update, click on system update and it should prompt you to download and install the update.

You need a micro usb OTG cable. I followed Jason’s instructions and mine worked just as he said connecting to a Mojo.
