Astell & Kern KANN - DAP with Massive Storage & Battery

So I think the Kann is going to be my in-home streamer... yes I don't really need it fast but easy/familiar in the user interface and good in the audio.

And there are no problems with the wifi as is happening on the alpha version which disconnects after 15 minutes, right?

Played through a whole album, 48 min, no break. I noticed that when the control feels less responsive it happens mostly when the wifi signal is very week.
Unfortunately the Kann had only 2.4 GHz band, which can be very crowded in dense populated areas.

Hi Everyone!
I posted a question elsewhere but then learned this is the best spot, so here it goes: how do I get my Kann Alpha to play DSD files through Jriver Media Center 27? No matter what I do, the led is always red for 16 bit. I can get green led for 24-Bit when I stream Tidal over wifi, and purple for DSD files I have stored internally. But my led is always red when I use it as a DAC with my windows laptop. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Yes, this is the best spot, even if it is for the original KANN 😄

Win10 - Start button - Settings - System - Sound
On the right side Sound-xxxxx (i do not have english windows, ), then you get a new window called Sound. In that one somewhere you have the Kann Alpha, right click, properties - Extended tab - format - change to 24bit 192000Hz. Your led should be green afterwads.

I do not know if or how Jriver media center 27 is able to play bitperfect. In the Qobuz desktop player I can set the driver to KANN Wasapi exclusive mode, then I get the bit rate show on KANN in DAC mode as shown on the song properties in Qobuz. Now playing 88.2 kHz despite audio setting 192 kHz.

My setting show 24-Bit and 384000Hz but still only get the red led for 16 bit. That doesn't seem right, but thanks anyways.

Hello friends... I was browsing checking for Kann Alpha, and I saw an offer from a shop: Kann at 500 EUR.
Since there are the Cube and the Alpha... buy it now new the original Kann at this price is still worth it?

Hi everybody. For Mac users using Mac Big Sur with the Kann player, because Android file transfer does not work on it (and badly on Catalina), i recommend the use of OPENMTP : https://openmtp.ganeshrvel.com.
this solution works fine and it's a donware (if you want this solution for a long time...). You have a two panels interface, one for your computer, the other for all SD cards and the memory of the Kann player. And last but not least, the transfer is done at the speed of light!
I have uninstall Android file transfer and I can transfer the number of files that I need without a copy crash. Great job !

The problem with the Kann player is that it is not more supported by A&K. Due to not enough ram, the player can't play directly all the stream services you want (only Tidal is available on the Kann). Kann alpha and cube can do it. Nethertheless you can use stream service with the Kann by using a dnla player (you will find info for Mac, pc, Apple phone on this post).

Well, that's interesting. I've no problem using the Android File Transfer app. How is it not working for you?

It depends how do you want to use it. For offline listening very good. It can take an SD and a microSD card. For dlna server listening also good if your 2.4 GHz environment is not overcrowded. The SE and the balanced out can be used at the same time. Useful for home cinema for two with HP.

I like its warm sound.

Two years ago it was the strongest DAP for about 1000 EUR. There are still only a few dap matching it's power, I am not aware of any for 500 EUR.

Alpha and Cube definitely a step up in every regard. It is up to your budget, taste and expectations if that worth the more than double price.

AK is aware of the issue and is working with Tidal on a fix. No ETA yet on when it will be fixed.
